Helmets are encouraged during Touristenfahrten but not required. HANS devices are prohibited.

You are not supposed to film . . . . lol
Ok, I may have that wrong. I thought he said that they weren't allowed.

We went metric in the 60's. It was an easy switch. I don't know how modern kids would cope with farthings, halfpennies, sixpences, shillings, florins, half crowns and pounds 🤣

Helmets are not allowed on tourist driving days, nor are Hanns devices. It's for the general public to drive as fast as they like. it's also classed as a public road. When it's a track day or race day, there's different rules.
Not sure about open cars on tourist days though. I'd want to wear a helmet then.
Not allowed? Say what?? Helmets are allowed byt not mandatory.

OK, I remember now. Misha said Hanns devices weren't allowed, and he didn't feel safe without one with a helmet.
He has got a point there, I'd never ride my bike without a helmet, but riders are subjected to different forces in a crash. There's lots of direct force on your neck when wearing a helmet in a car crash.

It may not be mandatory but what's he trying to prove? I don't get it. Glenn
Your question is answered above - Misha believes that the forces on his neck are too high in a crash if he is wearing a helmet without a HANS device to protect his neck and prevent basilar skull fractures.

“When I got to Pocono, everybody was calling me names,” he said. “Things like pansy and sissy. People were asking me, ‘What do you want to use something like that for?’”

Ibid.

Dale Earnhardt resisted the strange new device, but was more aggressive in speaking out against the need for improved safety.

"Tie kerosene rags around your ankles so ants don’t crawl up and eat your candy ass,” said the Intimidator. Before the race, Earnhardt visited the motor home of friend Dale Jarrett, another who would wear the HANS, to inquire about the strange new device. But he remained reluctant to use it, a pattern among star drivers in all major series.

Bill Elliott was one of the many who decided not to wear a HANS for that year’s 500, in part because his Ray Evernham team ran out of time trying to modify his seat for a proper fit. But following the death of Earnhardt on the last lap from a basal skull fracture, “He was wearing one at the next race at Rockingham,” said Evernham.

He is proving nothing. He is just using his right to not wear a helmet during the Tourist Drives, like everybody else.

He wears a helmet when he is doing real races.

My Nolan bike helmet is pretty light for a polycarbonate design - 1.62kgs.
I would not like to go sideways and hit a wall at 2 - 3 g's force wearing it, that's nearly 5 kgs swinging on my neck.
But then I don't want to smash my bare head against the B pillar either. I saw a driver killed by that. Dead as a dodo and not a mark on him.

There was already a video posted where the driver explained why. Watch it and you will understand.
Yes, glenng6, at least listen to what Misha has to say before you claim you cannot get it. Post # 40. And he wears a helmet when he has a car with a roll cage, and he wears a helmet when the track allows his HANS device and the car has a harness. He just does not wear it in a production car on Nurburgring during tourist drives. The video explains why, along with his analysis of the upsides and potential downsides of this decision and why he came to the conclusion he did. It is a pretty thorough explanation. You'll "get" it.
