S650 Tuning Info

Found this post on the S650 Mustang FB group, and figure I'd post it here:

So I talked to some Ford Performance engineers and specifically a guy that does testing on gen 4 crate engines and he writes calibrations. He told me today that it’s not because of EPA but because when Ford wanted to start doing over the air updates they figured out if you have access to the pcm you can theoretically hack someone’s car and take control of it. He did say they are openly trying to figure out a way to let us start tuning them but without the security risk.
He also told me the dual throttle bodies was done because the upper management thought it looked cool. The first rendition of our intake manifolds were almost a copy of Ferraris. But it made less power than the standard Gen 3 manifold so they asked Ford if they can go back and they said no, make it better then. He said it’s not until the very high rpm does the gen 4 manifold beat the gen 3 but once tuning is available and we can spin them higher we will see better results.

We already had dyno data on the gen 4 j take making a little more power up high

We've heard some much BS about the tuning situation, until it's available it's all just rumors.

sadly, when it comes to the fight of engineers vs accounting vs management, the engineers are always the first to lose. its only on something like the GTD where they can do more interesting stuff, where the price point is insane and production is so low. something i heard once is that if there is a problem, 97% of the time, the engineers found it, but accounting or management forced them to not fix it due to costs or time

That's how we end up with oil pump belts, 5W-20 oil, sealed for life transmissions, no dipsticks, DoD systems...

Hope they figure a way to allow tuning without compromising the security of the s650. As someone whose had their modded car stolen, I rather them take this route.

Screens are awesome. Duel throttle bodies are way cool, and as far a tuning goes I just got a stage 2 Whipple.

Tuning access will need to be leaked by someone within Ford, or cracked by someone with deep pockets. Thats what happened for the 2018+ mopars. Ford isnt going to "give access" to the aftermarket unless you are a Ford contracted partner like Whipple, Roush and now Procharger.

Aftermarket tuning will happen. Its a billion dollar industry thats just sitting out there waiting to be accessed. Just need time and money. bootloader encryption of the PCM is what we need access to. Getting the PCM to boot once the encryption checksum has changed allowing the car to start.

They have been flashed already not too soon after the s560 showed up, but after the flash the car would not start and it had to be flashed back to stock with Ford tools.

Its coming. And when it does, its going to be expensive. Someone will need to recoup the several millions or hundreds of millions of investment that had to be put out to buy access from some Chinese or Russian hacking team...

I like the screen, TB's, and I won't be tuning it as it can lose my licence in around 8-10 seconds as it is.

If the "hacking" fear/threat is true then Ford Performance could provide and sell a tune without unlocking the PCM. F.P. did it for the Whipple etc.. There is more to this story than any of us know at this time. F.P. could release their own tune anytime they wanted to without fear of hacking. It really is that simple.

I'm just wanting a FP tune. Hopefully it comes soon - from posts above it sounds like it is.

Just 20 more hp/tq and a snappier feeling on the pedal would be great.

On my '14 GT I had installed the Steeda intake and tune - woke that shit up quite a bit. I really noticed the difference when I'd return it to stock for a smog check. Definitely worth the cost.

PS - Anybody wants the intake/tune? I need to get rid of it! That car is gone. lol!
