for anyone looking to do their own research, here's some good places to start. it's all i could really find on this thing
https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/2138/text
https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/6850/text

this big takeaway is that the NHTSA is already late on making the rule, and take a look at this definition
(c) Definitions.—In this section—
(1) the term “advanced drunk driving prevention technology” means a passive system which—
(A) monitors a driver’s performance to identify impairment of a driver;
(B) a system which passively detects a blood alcohol level equal to and exceeding .08 blood alcohol content; or
(C) a similar system which detects impairment and prevents or limits vehicle operation;
the keyword there is passive. it must be passive and that's non-negotiable by the looks of it. remote disabling of a vehicle would not be a passive system.
that new bill looks to be doing some strange stuff including modifying some parts of the legal definitions involved in vehicles. the NHTSA seems to be having quite a bit of trouble actually making these sensors work, and that second bill really seems to be trying to force a completion of the work, but some seem to be saying it's not coming until 2028 or 2029

Here's the KBB story if anyone is interested.

What happened in Russia was likely due to Porsche pulling out of the country in 2022 after the invasion of Ukraine, and refusing to support their dealer network since. No one seems to know why the satellite communication failed, or will admit to it.

Is it possible to happen in the US? Of course. I think the question on the mind of everyone is, can/will the government be able to do it here, and I suspect that the answer - for now anyway - is no. Congress won't pass that kind of law.

Now, I believe that GM already has that kind of functionality via On-Star, to remotely disable a stolen car, but that's a GM thing, not a government mandate or law. And any knowledgeable thief immediately tears out the On-Star module (or unplugs the antenna) to remove the option. Or so I've heard. :wink:
It is the anti-theft system working exactly as it should. The issue is not the car, it is why Russia have blocked the satellite signals. No great surprise, as every time my son flies to Poland or Lithuania they get their GPS spoofed and blocked.

When there is a prolonged loss of satellite connectivity, the VTS interprets it as a potential theft attempt and immobilises the engine

Just imagine the recall potential when backup cameras are too complex (as in they can’t even make sure those are 100%)

Just an FYI to anyone that doesn't see this as overreach, or with the potential to be abused, consider this.

A few months ago, every single Porsche made after 2013 was remotely shut down via satellite in Russia, leaving them bricked on the side of the road or in parking spots.
This is actually incorrect. Their anti-theft systems worked exactly as they should. There was no remote shutdown from on high!

Was there a man with a screwdriver that went to each car?

The satellite said X, the car interpreted it and said Y.

There is a direct outside influence. Its remote. Stop nitpicking

Who cares? This isn’t Russia. And based on what @roket posted it’s not happening here either.

"Who cares. This isn't Russia".

Yeah, things that happen outside my bubble CANNOT by any means happen inside it.

You are just stirring up a conspiracy and ignoring facts to fit your narrative

What conspiracy? Where have I ever said anything about any conspiracy.

Is the conspiracy that I don't want a technology mandated in every new car that can remotely shut it off, because I feel its an overreach?

Please do tell what conspiracy I'm peddling.

Their time would be better spent keeping people off cell phones while driving. Karens and Nannys are killing us.

It is an anti-theft system (good thing) that can be turned off and is not Dr Porsche turning off your car. Get a grip man!
