Still trying to select wheels/tires for my S650. Was trying to go with all season tires, but am thinking about going the summer tire route for the new wheels, and putting the stock all seasons back on if I travel up north, which on occasion I do to visit family. I live in upstate South Carolina, very little to no snow, but temps can get in the 20's. I have read somewhere that the 555 G2's are not safe at those temps? Can anyone vouch for that? Does anybody keep those G2's on during cold weather? I bought a GT Premium 400A with zero options and am itching to get new wheels/tires under it! Love my car, but these 255/40R19's gotta go. Thanks!!

I wouldn't want them on my car in the 20's

I have them on my 2011 and really like them. They were a design effort between Nitto and Steeda to improve the 555 gen 1. There is no way I would run them in winter temps 40 degrees or below.

Due to its summer-specific tread compound, the NT555 G2 drastically loses grip in temperatures below about 40° F. The NT555 G2 isn't safe to be used year-round, through four seasons.

I’m in Upstate SC as well and daily drive my 2024 GT. I survived our little recent winter storm and I have the Nitto NT555 G2s in 285/35 19 on the front and 305/35 19 on the rear. Is winter driving optimal, no…but do able. Just have to drive carefully and understand that both acceleration and braking are greatly hindered in the cold. Even when it is dry, being cold, they will spin/slip very easily. Since winters are still fairly mild here, I personally can handle it. They do fine in the warmer months.
With that said, can’t say I would recommend them year round. Do it at your own risk. Since our little freeze in Upstate SC last usually only a few weeks to a month, it is possible but like I said you have to be careful and also patient, lol.

I've had them on both my supercharged '21 GT as well as now on my (soon to be supercharged) Dark Horse.

Here are my thoughts
  • NT555 G2 is great fun driving / street tire... for non FI applications
    • If you boost (over 600 RWHP) recommend softer compound rear tires
      • Nitto NT555 RII are a good entry level but ideally a MT or Hoosier or something
  • Should not be used below 7 C (44.6 F)
  • Wear is pretty decent. I had like 25000km out of my G2 fronts before I sold my '21 GT
    • They still had life left in them when I sold it. Probably another 10k
