I want to use my factory midnight pony black8.5 inch wide cast aluminum wheels for slicks. Has anybody tried putting ram screws to keep the tires from slipping on the bead? Do you think it’ll be safe to do this to those wheels?

I would only use wheels designed for it. Drilling OEM wheels is not a great idea…. Several reasons come to mind.

1. You can’t go back to radials
2. The wheels are designed for it
3. The drilled holes wont last and you will need different rims in time if they don’t crack.
4. Safety

I recommend finding a drag wheel designed for it. I think I saw someone post an OEM style wheel designed for screws somewhere.

Yeah, I'm no wheel expert, but I suspect it would be pretty risky doing this on wheels not designed for it.

Agree with others: drilling into the factory rims is not something I'd do.

It's not worth the risk. I'd always be doubting myself and what could happen. If driven on the street and there was an accident, an insurer would be looking to wash their hands of the whole thing, even if the wheels were not directly involved.

Yes please dont drill your rims. :please:Its a very bad idea to say the least. I would feel terrible if someone got hurt or worse from that and it was asked here and no one at least said no.

Do not do this, it was what we did BEFORE bead locks out of necessity.

And I can just about guarantee your not gonna slip the tire, mark it, if you get more than 1/4” then fine, go beadlocks.

It’s physically hard to even do it on a 19”, it’s not like a 15x10 with a huge floppy slick that’s gonna wad up under load, you’ll never have the sidewall to build pressure like that.

OK OK I guess it was a bad idea. Some racers use Perma tack glue to prevent tires from spinning on the rim, however I heard it can be a bitch to ever take those tires off.
And as Q states shorter profile tire will probably not wrinkle up and spend the first place
A man I do like the looks of bead locks. A question for Q and other people would be locks we can melt our own tires at home however, have you tried getting these things balanced? I will think of those screws and beads. We really make for a lot of vibration.

I don’t balance my bias ply tires.
Never noticed any vibration, shake etc…

it takes a long time to change tires, most shops won’t touch them, I have 2 tire spoons to break the bead, the on/off of the tire isn’t bad but you need to make 3 passes with a 1/4” TQ wrench in a cross pattern to properly seat the ring.
It easily took me 2 hours to do them the 1st time.
