Those cheap 2nd tier gas stations there is no telling what you are getting other then raw E+ gasoline with or without additives for extended engine life.

Exactly, the cheap gas stations that are unbranded or are discount brands ( BJ;s, Costco, etc) are buying the EPA formulated gas without the additives the majors put in such as detergents above and beyond the EPA formulation

They are saving on marketing costs and by buying plain generic gasoline, sometimes on the spot market, sometimes they larger companies will have supply contracts with refineries.

As someone said above Ford did learn the hard way that there needed to be some gasoline brought thru the intake valve to wash the carbon off that gets deposited during valve overlap/reversion and that also washes the intake manifold.

Look on YT for videos of Kias, EcoBoosts and other cars with valve carbon issues and what it takes to clean them. Many shops use walnut shell blasting, some that have the time will get the intake valve closed and then pour a solvent in the head to soften it up then go in and scrape the carbon deposits out.

Costco gas is top tier.

For the record, Costco gas is Tier 1 gas. This list of Tier 1 stations is on this thread or you can look it up.
