The GT grill, where the intake connects, need to go. I want to Dremel it out, but I don't want it to look crappy.

I saw these on Amazon. I don't care about the carbon look. I want it in high gloss black like the OEM look. But if someone could make a set of these that extended past the grill so that you wouldn't see the cut marks... wow. We could open up the grill air intakes with "whatever" and stick these on that extended past the cuts... and you basically would have DH openings with no cut marks. Sell them in high gloss black. You'd sell a ton of them!

What they're showing you in the video is how to modify your existing grill to accept, and install, their custom mesh.
Obviously you don't need to worry about a lot of that, but it is a pretty detailed video and will show you what and where to cut to accomplish exactly what you are looking for.

I'm lazy. I could easily Dremel the sections of the grill out. But if someone 3D printed these or made them so that they extended into the intake tracts by like 1/2" past the intake plumbing... you'd never see the cut marks. Paint them in high gloss black like the OEM grill... you'd easily have DH openings that looked OEM.

I don't want to change the factory grill. I like the look. I just don't want the grill over the intake tracts.

This would easily address that with trivial labor.. and look OEM.

Not into the "mesh grill" look. I prefer the OEM grill. Just want to open up the intake tract blockage to achieve a DH style opening. This would allow it to be done easily with minimal labor and still look OEM... at pretty much a trivial cost (and not have to remove the bumper cover).

Yeah, I understand that.
I wasn't suggesting that you put the mesh in.

I was suggesting that you watch the video I posted, so that you could see how to cut the existing mesh out of the intakes to get the DH style opening, while maintaining a quality appearance, at pretty much ZERO cost. Provided of course, you already have a dremel , cutting bit, and tools to remove the grill from the car.

If you have the complex calculus skills to measure the air flow difference between stock and modified versions, you'd have to ask yourself if less than a one-digit difference was worth the effort?! I think not. In fact, the difference would be in the fluff (natural mathematical variation) of any dyno set up. As Shakespeare would have said... Much todo about nothing!

Watched the video. Should have watched it first.. sorry. I don't want to pull the bumper off the car. If someone produced these just a little deeper into the intake tract, you could easily do it without having to remove anything (call me lazy :-)

I wouldn't call this restriction nothing.

You should consider the fact that Ford designed it this way for a reason. They could have easily provided all open honeycomb in this area if that amount of free area was required. They wouldn't choke off the air intake to the car. My best guess is they provided enough free area for the intake while closing off the area that is not needed for aerodynamic efficiency.

You probably won't negatively affect your car by removing the closed off portions but I also don't think you are going to see any gains.

There must be a reason why these are designed like that. By opening that area all the way it might cause turbulence or something and mess up or even slow down the air traveling into the motor. Just a thought.

The only reason Ford would have done this is reduce the CD on the car (which is why they have the louvers that open and close on the main portion of the grill).

It's not a rain thing because the DH's have the grill wide open and w/o moveable louvers.

It's an easy fix. I just don't want to pull off the bumper to do it. I'd rather have someone fab some of these up, then you can just Dremel these portions of the grill, and slide the proposed inserts right in covering the cuts in the process. It would make it a trivial process rather than taking the entire bumper assy off the car.

I'm considering having these 3D printed, using covers shown here as a template that gets modified if nobody else here is interested.

486HP requires anywhere between 720cfm-825cfm (depending on the VE). That means you approx 3.5 in² area in the openings minimum (obviously more area is better). And if the car is tuned or modified, the situation gets worse. I haven't measured the grill tiny openings (nor am gonna attempt to... past my pay grade), but I'm not seeing that much area. And it's most likely why these S650's dyno higher with the airbox lids off.

The other benefit would be the IAT's being lower.
