We called it the SLR, Self Loading Rifle. It was standard Army issue until we went to the Steyr AUG. I think we have M4's now.Ever tried what you chaps call an LAR? WE call in FN-FAL. What an easy rifle to shoot. There's a place in New Mexico you can rent and shoot at their range. My first handgun was a Colt Delta Elite. Only available in one caliber, 10mm. It now stays in the safe.
We could buy surplus SLR's quite cheap, but they were heavy. I bought a Taiawnese M16 clone in semi auto as a bush gun.
Something tough that could roll around in the back of the van in case we saw a pig by the road when we were game shooting.
