Metallic clank slow speed

Pulling into the weekly mustang club meeting at a local store parking lot, windows rolled down, driving at a walking pace, we could hear a clear, irregular metallic clank, similar to what you hear when hitting 2 wrenches together. Happens going forward and back, and is audible at very low speeds.
Removed the wheels: everything appeared fine.
Does anyone know what this could be?
