My neighbor just bought a 2019 Mustang GT. The original owner had it coated five years ago, so the new owner wants the old coating removed and a new one applied. Of course, he asked me what to do. I have no clue, so here I am asking for some expert advice. What procedures should he take to start removing the old coating?

OMG......The Google method sounds pretty harsh on a painted car. Other than that, I just don't know. Maybe that Aussie detailer knows.

If its a true ceramic coat, it is bonded to the paint, which means it has to be removed by mechanical means. You will see many people say it has to be sanded off, it does not. You need a DA polisher, a medium pad and a polish like 3D One, DIY gold polish, etc. If you are not comfortable with a polisher then best to take it to a detailer to remove as clear coats are not very thick these days and if you don't know how to polish you could go through the clear coat.

This is why I said "OMG". It's VERY easy to blow through a clear coat and DA's are good, if you're good with them. Agree, best to go to a good detailer in this situation.

I have a Flex XC3401VRG with various pads to use. Ceramic coatings have a life determined by the quality of the product. With it being 5 years old he is thinking that now is the time to start fresh with a new application. I don't want to be involved any more than i am. I'll send him to an active detailer.

You have to machine it off with a polisher. Curious why he would want to do that. Is there something wrong with the current coat?

Contrary to what most think, you don't have to totally remove every last molecule of that coating before reapplication. Some also think you need to blast the paint with heavy compounding and even wet sanding, but those making claims like that have no idea what they are talking about.

The thing is, unless the car in question is a garage queen, that coating is long gone or on its last legs. With that in mind, just go through with a decon wash (iron remover, wash with alkaline soap, clay). Then polish using an appropriate compound depending on what needs correcting, then wipe down with IPA and re-apply a coating.

Iron Remover - Gyeon Iron, Carpro IronX or NV Purify

Alkaline Soap - Carpro Lift, Koch Chemie Active Foam, Gyeon Foam

Clay - The Rag Company Ultra Clay (available in sponge, towel, mitt or traditional clay bar)

Polishing Compound - Dependant on defect removal needed, but Sonax Perfect Finish, Scholl S20 or P&S Rehab are good starting points.

IPA - Capro Eraser is the best here, otherwise Gyeon Prep or Rupes Reveal

The reality is, you would do the exact same process no matter what the LSP was or is going to be, that includes ceramic coatings, spray sealants, waxes and liquid sealants.

By no means was this car a garage queen. It wasn't abused, but it certainly wasn't taken care of. It was parked outside for most of its life. So the need for new exterior care is necessary. DFB5.0, your outline will be forwarded and used. Thank you.

If that's the case the ceramic is probably long gone like DFB5.0 said.

Just treat it like a new application as outlined above.
