DIY Cerakote for headers

Today I will start prepping my Kooks headers for Cerakote high heat ceramic coating. I’m going to be using easily available and affordable stuff I bought from amazon to do the job and I will give my honest feedback on the process. I will update the thread with pictures after each stage. To start everything off I will be cleaning with clean rags and acetone to remove any oils from the fabrication process. Then I will hit them with a torch to heat them up for a further step towards cleaning and removing oils. Then it’s time to sand blast everything before the final step of actually coating them. Let me know if there is anything you would like to know or see.

I was looking at Kooks with the green cats for my DH. What is the reason for the coating? Keep them nice looking or is there some sort of actual functional reason for coating them?

Aside from keeping them looking good it helps to keeps the under hood temperature down.

It's supposed to be good for up to 1800F... we'll see.

Sorry, only answered part of your question. It does not require any high temp bake to cure. It's a 5 day air dry to cure.

It's supposed to help keep the under hood temperatures down and it works cosmetically to keep them looking good for a very long time. They won't change color from the heat or stain if oil gets spilled on them. You'll be fine by not doing it, most people don't.

I did duraheat -from duracoat on a Ti suppressor and did not prep the can well enough. I called and they said “it’s good to 1800F, prep the can better”. They appear to have been correct.

So to test it, I crammed it on to a 5.56 AR with a 7” barrel, loaded up 20+ 30 round magazines. We fired as many magazines as we could with aimed fire. We saw a tick over 1200F just past the muzzle on the can at peak. The coating held up.

Just follow the prep instructions diligently.

This is the kind of scientific testing I can get behind. Very Garandthumb type stuff. I'm building an AR-10 and will be coating that too. Testing will be done in the name of science

A ceramic coating can increase the speed of the exhaust gas flow. Likewise, it can help reduce thermal tumbling, which happens when hot spots develop on bare metal (like those bends of tubing on exhaust pipes). When the headers and the manifold are coated, heat is disbursed across the entire metal material.
