I just discovered something interesting today: when the car is on and parked without the handbrake, the lights stay on. But as soon as you engage the handbrake—even with the car still running—the lights switch off. Had no idea until now. Here’s a quick video.

This is a thing for as long as I can remember...

For a while it was a thing to install a kill switch for your tail lights and if you wanted to run dark on the front you could pull your handbrake just a click so as not to engage the brake but still disengage your driving lights.

I mean, that's just a rumour, but it sounds legit ;)

This has pretty much been the norm for all US built cars with DRL's. GM cars work the same way. The GM cars I had, as mentioned, just one click on the parking brake would turn off the DRL's

Just maybe you all should read the NHTSA's rule governing these lights. Wouldn't hurt, in fact, to scan the various rules about stability controls, automatic braking, etc. They are a bit boring, but enlightening (no pun intended) too.

Depending on where I am in town, my daytime running lights are the full headlights on bright. People are dumbed down and used to DRL's. About one in a hundred people flash me to dim.
