I should receive my mustang next month and I am planning on having my car ceramic coated. I am wondering if I need to have a clear coat too before the ceramic.

Thank you

Usually a paint correction is done prior to the ceramic coating... if done by a reputable shop. The factory paint already has a clear coat.

Humm that's weird as my salesman told me I need to have it done by the dealer. I need to get more info on that.

They may be just trying to sell you more stuff... Talk to a local detail shop. Not saying the dealer can't do it, though they may try to sell you extras that you don' need.

Ceramic coatings are a wonderful thing, but for the love of sweet baby Jesus, don't let the dealership do it. It's nothing more to them than a profit point and they will absolutely not use a real ceramic coating.

What it seems is that a clear coat is factory done and included no extra cost. So it couldn't have been a misunderstanding so I will see.

As for having the dealer do it don't worry it was never in my intention.

Either your dealer his an idiot or he was trying to screw you. Clear coat gets applied after paint at the factory.

Even though your car is brand new, I advise to have the detailer do at decontamination wash and at LEAST a 1-step paint correction. Every car, even new, has minor scratches, swirls, and other imperfections that will get sealed under the ceramic coat if not addressed in advance. You don' want to look at those imperfections for years.

They did a great job on my DH, including that and the IGL Kenzo 5-year ceramic coat.

Pick out your own shop, take it in yourself. If they are using a third party, that means a kid porter is beating your car to and from Details. Handle it on your own, you will be happier with the outcome.

Mine was done by a dealer. But, they have a dedicated shop, use good products I was familiar with. And talking to the manger of that shop was very confidence inspiring. She was a petrolhead to the core.
The car still gleams like new.
