For those with catch cans installed, how and when do you clean the filters in them?

Thanks, FD

There isn't a filter to clean, so to speak. Most kits are 2-piece, canister and top piece that houses a built in filter, along with mounting hardware. The top with built in filter remains in place (attached to mounting hardware) and the canister gets removed to drain oil residue. The J&L kit I have, I check monthly and drain residue oil. In most cases the canister is only a fifth to quarter full.

Thank you and I get that but sooner or later that filter, like all filters by their nature will need to be cleaned, considering all the "undesireables and waste" that go through them.

I have the UPR can. I see it not as a filter, but as a screen. The screen knocks the oil out of the air flow and helps capture it in the canister. If it was a filter, it would hold it. You are dealing with a liquid and while oil can build up a residue, it would take years and years to make any noticeable build up. I did review UPR’s site and they said not to use any harsh chemicals. But that comment was focused on the finish of the canister.

No filter in an oil separator. When you first put it on check after the first 1000 miles and that should give you a gauge on how often you need to dump the oil and clean the canister.

To give some additional context to how much oil my car is catching. This is an accumulation of all the oil out of my catch can at 25k it has been on my car since approx 250 miles.

Yes. You can pull it off the UPR site as well. Attached is from their site that I referenced above, but I recommend making sure it is the right one for your application.

That is an insane amount and I question if it's even connected properly, you really shouldn't see any more than a tablespoon or two in a couple thousand miles
Your engine would not be sucking in that much oil under normal circumstances

This is just under 11 tablespoons of oil (160ml). That’s 25,000 miles / 11 tablespoons of oil = 2,272 miles per tablespoon. Same as your description of what it should be.

The way you worded it I thought it was only 250 miles

What kind of freak saves all that?

That’s a good question. šŸ˜‚ This freak I guess.

I’ve never had one on a vehicle so I thought I would put it in a jar I had around and see what it was actually catching. In the end it amazing how much oil it is capturing.
