I got the dreaded "features are being turned off to preserve battery life" message on the app after taking my motorcycle to work for two weeks. Ok, no problem, so I ordered a DelTran Battery Tender (DBT) to replace my aging DBT that I had bought in Germany and was using an adapter to plug it in on the bike.

I hooked up the new DBT to the jumpstart points on the 'Stang and left it overnight, approximately 20 hours or so. During that time, the light on the DBT remained steady red, indicating charging. When I checked it this morning, it was still steady red. Measuring with a multimeter, with the DBT hooked up and powered on, I got 14.75V, which indicates charging. Measuring at the jump points with the DBT unhooked, the battery measures at 12.85V, which should indicate a good charge.

The light on the DBT never went to flashing green or steady green.

What am I missing here?

ETA: Hooked up the tender to the motorcycle, which was ridden yesterday for about an hour. After an hour, it went full steady green. I hooked it back up to the Mustang, and it went full steady green after about 20 minutes.

Weird.

Is it for AGM batteries?
The website says that it is compatible with all 12V lead-acid, flooded, AGM, and gel cell batteries. The outside of the box says the same. The instruction manual says "designed for six cell lead-acid batteries." Maybe I got old stock through Amazon or something.

Depending on how many amps your charger is rated for, it might take another day or two to fully charge your battery and register on the tender.

In cases where the battery is substantially low an appropriately sized charger should be used. A battery maintainer/tender is designed to keep a fully charged (or close) battery in tip top condition.

I have the 1.25 amp Battery Tender. it tops off a well maintained battery in my GT within a few hours.

The first time you use it expect up to a few days before it tops off with 1.25 amp. But it will get there. It just goes to show you how badly these modern cars put a strain on these batteries that the alternator just doesn't seem to be able to catch up to.

Use it often as possible to keep your battery in top condition.

If you have depleted battery that you want to get it back will take three days of battery charge to revive it! It happened to me that in the cold days batteries do get depleted faster than in the summer time! So when cold and depleted, charge the battery for three days and then check it to see if it is improving or not? If not, it is more likely a new battery would be needed! But if it works and you don’t plan to use it for the winter, leave it on till it’s warm outside to drive!

I’m almost wondering if the bms and jump points confuse the charger. Tempted to suggest connecting directly to the battery and performing a bms reset after but then that kinda defeats the purpose of the trickle charge but at the same time even when doing trickle with jump points the bms can get confused and may need 8 hours to relearn but by that time you’ve most likely started and driven a short distance and now the state of charge is all out of whack and the car ends up going to sleep every two days.

If you decide to get a new charger, I would recommend CTEK same as Ford $40 cheaper on Amazon.

As an aside to the battery tender issue, I believe that the features being turned off due to non use after two weeks is a time issue and not a battery issue. Even when on a tender, my 2024 will still turn off features after two weeks of non use, until it's started again.

Does disconnecting the battery during storage or periods of inactivity confuse the BMS logic?
