Anyone else still doing a strict 1,000-mile break-in period? Or am I in the minority?

Am I part of a dying breed here worried about break-in?

Anyone do the fumoto valve on the mustangs?
Getting past the under carriage cover is a bigger issue than the drain plug for me. For those doing oil changes every 3-5K it might be worth it.

Ford also recommended BP for the S197, but I generally topped up with Chevron. Mine is sitting at 200k miles with no major repairs

Fumoto does make a nice piece of kit. I'm using one on another vehicle.

If you have not already purchased, you might look at UPR's offerings. Theirs is the same concept of controlling the flow, but UPR's are magnetic.

Can't go wrong with either choice.

Hey everyone,

Curious to get a pulse check from the community on this. I just picked up my Mustang, and I’m currently sticking to a strict 1,000-mile break-in routine. For me, that means keeping it under 4,000 RPM, varying my speeds on the highway, and completely avoiding the urge to drop the hammer or use launch control.

I know modern manufacturing tolerances are incredibly precise compared to the old days, and I've seen plenty of people say "drive it like you stole it from day one" or that the factory already handles it. But for me, it's just cheap insurance and peace of mind for the long-term health of the engine and drivetrain.

Am I part of a dying breed here, or are there still plenty of you out there who meticulously baby your car for those first 1,000 miles before finally letting it rip?
I always try to follow the manufacturers break in recommendations.

I was trying until i found out my dealership railed on my Dark Horse while it was in the shop. How do I know? 30 hours of driving and avg 17 mpg. Got it back with 35 miles driven and average below 16 with a little over 30 miles driven. Additionally found one of the rear tires were scraped up with curb scratches. And the bonus is a 6 inch blade in the passenger side.
I would be PISSED off. Mine is a manual and I cannot imagine what those idiots would do to my clutch and transmission. These cars should have some sort of Valet Parking low power option to protect the car from Neanderthal "Techs"......................

I thought about valet mode, but i was there for them to fix the clunk issue with the mustang GT/DH. I would bet these guys could over ride the valet mode. I am pretty tempted to write the google review of the dealership and show the picture of the 6 inch blade that I found in the passenger side.

I did not know that our cars have a Valet Mode! Great to know, for sure. If mine ever has to go in for anything Valet Mode will be ON.

So some banger left a knife in your DH?
After taking it for a joy ride and rubbing my tire on a curb. And decreasing mpg from 17 to 16 in 20 miles (original 17mpg was for 30 hours driven)

They usually keep the car running idle for long times, I wouldn’t overreact over that piece of information.

OK Used AI and found out that Valet Mode is basically useless. Does not restrict performance at all. Just protects settings and some other BS.

In the past few days, I've heard two different "stars" on shows on the Motor Trend channel comment to the effect that they don't worry about driving an engine with roller lifters hard immediately after assembly, and that such an engine doesn't really require breaking-in. Since Coyotes have roller finger followers, the same logic could arguably be applied to our engines. However, since you're really "breaking-in" the whole drivetrain, I still follow the old-school rules for the first thousand miles.
