Measuring 0.5m from the exhaust is ridiculous. I would expect many "ordinary" cars in stock form might not pass.
Really? That 1.7ft or 19in which is what they use in California. When I lived in CA I had a subaru sti with a fujitsubo cat back that passed at 19 in so no normal cars are fine, as well as some slightly modded ones. My dark horse with awe catback in track mode, hits 105 db 19 in away from the pipe at 3500 rpm. 6 k rpm it maxes at around 110. Quiet mode wont even break 100db

My thought was simply that the sound will be louder 19 inches away vs. the distances people typically are from cars in normal situations. No surprise about California's procedure. That's where a Hyundai Elantra N owner was ticketed and required to "fix" his bone stock car.

He had it in track mode, which is not for on road use, we get the same warning with track mode on our cars and baja mode in the raptors. Anyway, they measure close to the car, because they calculate how loud the dba will be by the time it gets to a home or business from where the cars will be on the street. Its never been about other cars on the road its been about sound pollution for residents and companies. For example the sound level from your property for a car passing by should only be about 86 dba.

Then they should have ticketed the driver because track mode was "too loud" and left it at that instead of requiring him to do the impossible.

Really its impossibly to quiet down an exhaust? He could have literally thrown a vibrant resonator on there and called it a day. Nobody wants to hear his Muscle car loud sub 300 hp rice burner anyway.

Impossible to "fix" (i.e. cure a defect), but yes of course he could modify it. Perhaps California should simply prohibit the sale of vehicles capable of being "too loud" rather than harassing owners to modify them.

Finally something we agree on. :) But I don't think I could trust the cops there to discriminate.

The way the cops out there are if the car looks like it should be that loud for example a mustang gt , ferrari, gtr etc they typically leave them alone. But if its a honda civic thats like as loud as your active exhaust mustang in track mode its a problem. I had lots of modified cars out there only got a ticket for an exhaust once, it was one of my first cars and it was a 96 5spd corolla that was loud as hell hahah.

Thanks for the 8th grade civics lesson? I glossed over the specifics because admins on this site get mad at anyone speaking against conservatives. Your post reads like AI slop.
Your attitude also reads like AI slop so thanks for comin' out sparky.

I'm not over sensitive to noise, but if I can tell a gang members straight piped Hardly from a Ducati from 2 kms away and inside a fully insulated house, It's too f'n loud.
It's a shame lawmakers don't also apply qualilty of noise as well as volume. Then Coyotes could run at 105db and still be legal.

The difference is loud pipes on a motorcycle will save your life. There are a whole lot of states where the cops dont care how loud your mustang is as ling as it has mufflers. Also why make the over generalization that because someone has a strait pipes Harley that they are a gang member?

Having ridden for 35+ years, I do not believe loud exhausts save lives. Especially in modern cars with all the sound proofing and powerful sound systems. When car drivers hit a biker it's usually "WTF was that?" or SMIDSEY - Sorry Mate I Didn't See You.
And the number of 'tards who barely hear your siren behind them and do not have a clue where it's coming from was eye opening.
And, the absolute knobheads who, in an emergency, take their right fingers off the brake, and pull the clutch to rev bomb an errant driver instead of simply pushing a horn button deserve all they get. I relied on an airhorn
In my town it's a 90%+ certainty they are Angels, Mongrels or Black Power, possibly some Killer Bees thrown in. Most decent Harley owners are tucked up in bed after 9.00PM. and in their offices all day.

I have no problems hearing cruiser motorcycles with exhaust systems with the windows up in my mustang or my raptor and they have pretty good sound proofing. There have been several times I only knew there was a biker in my blind spot because I could clearly hear his bike. I am not saying it will make a difference every single time, but it absolutely can help. Just like visible gear, bright colored helmet, driving like every cager is out to kill you, etc.

The last one kept me alive. As for high vis, I made eye contact with a driver waiting to pull out, and he proceeded to do so, I avoided him.
They may not actually try to kill you, but they're indifferent which is much the same thing.
