It's worked for everyone for 25 years. It's a cycle with you all. Moan and complain online about government surveillance, say you would never vote for that, then vote for someone that does exactly that, then act surprised when you see legislation boosting government surveillance. We gave up our right to privacy in 2001 when we let the Patriot act go uncontested. We opened Pandora box and have been staring at it saying "someone should probably close this" ever since.
Some people just moan - about everything. Just their nature.

1. You do not know me
2. You do not know my political affiliation
3. I was legally unable to vote or have a say in the Patriot Act. Not everyone on this forum is a 65 yr old.
1 I was using the general "you" to address this whole topic.
2 I don't give a shit.
3 doesn't mean you can't read the writing on the wall.

Give enough of a shit to keep responding and acting like anything I have said it wrong or incorrect.

Its not.

Why are we not allowed to talk about the writing on the wall. Why do people like you always turn your nose to us when we bring it up.

I respond because it's a conversation people tend to do that in those.
I bring up peoples constant complaining here because performative bullshit is just that. Quit talking and do something about it. I don't like government tracking anymore than you do. But instead of going online and complaining I take action to reduce the impact of these decisions on me because I know nothing I say will change that.

Enlighten me. What actions do you take

I don't even know why this thread exists. When the interweb first came out, I pulled up a search engine and entered "personal privacy". Not to my surprise, there is no such thing. I learned to do research before there was an interweb and that has helped me imensely since then. Nah, I'm not upset. I have cars they can't touch and other things that don't exist. Come get me.
There is. It just requires a bit more IT expertise, effort (and what people would now consider "personal sacrifice" via the loss of some convenience) than most people are willing to learn/expend. I think people have different thresholds for what they consider "private".

Sure there are laws that can be invoked to get whatever the Government wants, but those are more extreme cases (at least for the moment). Its the 24/7 digital surveillance that I think bothers most people. The capability (as of 2024) to literally client-side scan a laptop, smartphone, smart TV, or other smart device to totally bypass encryption, capture personal files, analyze it all with AI, monitor you in your car, and take all personal data from smart devices (watches, your appliances, TV) is the issue here - not that the Government could have my medical data if they wanted it, or that the FBI could request Bitlocker keys from MSFT for a suspects laptop. That is where the "I'm not a criminal, I don't care" argument has weight for the average person. The problem is that people are lazy and apply that to EVERYTHING and by not caring, they allow and enable the increasingly pervasive surveillance state and associated actions/mindset that come with that and it allows the definition of "criminal" to be changed to whatever is politically convenient.

IMO this stuff should be part of mandatory basic education along with basic finance, nutrition and many other areas that our general education system is not updated for. Although frankly I'm not sure if most adults are capable of explaining why it's even an issue.

Key thing to note is in this day and age true privacy is impossible short of living in North East Maine.
In regard to the car specifically I keep myself off any subscription service (radio, GPS etc) I don't let insurance track any of my info in my car. All my interactions with them are via web browser, not an app. More importantly I do what I can to learn what each "thing" the car is tracking does. Why does the car have microphones? For ANC and in car calls. Stuff like that. If I don't know what it foes I like to figure it out and, if not required, disable it.

Life in general the best you can do is pick and chose who to give your info to. For me that was Google and Microsoft. I have a Facebook that I post once a year to let the old folks know I'm alive. Otherwise all of my accounts are centralized around my Google and Microsoft accounts. Two points of failure sure, but I also know at the end of the day who and what info is being harvested (since the two accounts don't even agree on my age)

Can the government easily track me this way? Sure, will they? Probably not, I've worked for them, they can't even keep track of their own asses with two hands and a map. It's not the government im concerned about.

Avoidance is impossible, the best you can do is minimize exposure.

Okay epic, so you're doing the same as every other performative person out there.

Nothing performative about that. You asked, i answered. I don't do that stuff to show off, I do that stuff for my own peace of mind.

Missed my point.

These 'actions' you take that put you above the 'performative' people that complain are the same, if not less, than what most performative people do. The only difference is that when the 'performative' people see that the government wants to add tech into cars that allows the police to remotely shut them off, the 'performative' people say "I dont like that"

You're not above it, dude.

Here's the KBB story if anyone is interested.

What happened in Russia was likely due to Porsche pulling out of the country in 2022 after the invasion of Ukraine, and refusing to support their dealer network since. No one seems to know why the satellite communication failed, or will admit to it.
There is historic irony in this.

One not so small thing I don't do is put apps on my phone. Everybody and their pet gerbel wants me to put their app on my phone for different purposes. Nope, we aren't going to do that.

Look at how many people want computer access to your checking account so they can control your cash flow, not you. Nope, I still write old fashioned checks and in some instances, plain old cash. They must send me a paper invoice too or no pay. There are other people that want my business. Places are hating to take cash now. I can see it in their body language. Oh well. Part of it is they can't and don't count change correctly. They're going to count my change back to me or I won't leave. Just some not so small things I do amongst many others. My way with my money.

Unrelated note to the above convo. Decided to look into this legislation to see if it's even likely to pass. The one we're talking about here is an addition to us Title 49 to add the following:

The European NCAP portion covers the inclusion of driver distraction/sleep aids that already exist in cars like ours. The alcohol monitoring system however is more interesting as even the DADSS has acknowledged their biggest constraints is public perception around privacy. No doubt about it being an invasive tracking technology, but I would caution against going hard line opposed to this technology. Congress will be blinded by "surveys" saying xx% of people love safety systems and will use that as justification. However we are not without options, those very same surveys also say things such as:

The biggest issue with our privacy isn't these new technologies that will come whether you want it or not. But the lack of regulation around the privacy side.

At the very least I would highly encourage everyone to reach out to their congress members to, if not block this entirely, use it as a justification to get some semblance of our privacy enshrined in the US code of law.
