So, I’ve had a chance to drive my “hated” S650 for about three months now, and I decided to share a few observations. Why “hated”? Because after owning two S550s and one GT350, I was convinced I would never, ever be able to live with that atrocity — the pinnacle of ugliness — those two big screens.

And yet, here I am. Three months in, and honestly… I’m happy with them. More than I could have ever imagined.

BTW, here is a pic — but keep in mind I bought the car in October. Since then we got snow, and we still have snow and very cold temperatures, so I haven’t been able to do any spectacular scenery photoshoot yet. (the image is from the PPF shop, I have it fully wrapped)

After driving it for a week or two on the factory-fitted Pirellis, I decided it was time to put winter tires on. I went with Michelin Alpine Sport 5. On all my previous Mustangs (with the exception of the GT350 — that one never leaves the garage unless it’s warm and dry), I was using Hankook i*Cept Gen 3 and was quite happy with them… except in snow. In deeper snow they really didn’t offer much grip.

Because of that, I was hoping the Michelins would be better — and I have to say, they were. I managed to climb a rather steep, actually very steep hill. Taking that road was a dumb decision, but once I was on it, I had no other option. Stopping in the middle of the hill would have meant sliding downhill uncontrollably.

The tires held up surprisingly well. There was some rear-end slipping, but the car kept crawling uphill and eventually made it.

Anyway, I’m now at 5,000 km on the odometer (roughly 3,100 miles), and I have a few observations to share:

• The screens – they are actually quite good-looking, and I got used to them surprisingly quickly. The controls are logical and, contrary to what some reviewers said, you don’t need to “touch the seat heating first and then select the level.” You just keep touching the “button” and it cycles from 0 to 3, then 2, 1, and back to 0. Same logic applies to other controls. I still prefer physical buttons, but honestly, it’s nowhere near as bad as some people made it sound.

• 10R80 transmission – this is tuned really very well. Where my S550 was probably the biggest disappointment, the S650 absolutely shines. The gearbox is quick, responsive, and it doesn’t constantly try to under-rev the engine just to make green lunatics happy with emissions. I’m very pleased with the 10R80 tuning here. The 6th gen was not tuned well at all — it would either lug the engine all the time, or do the opposite and kick down 3–4 gears, which made the drive far from smooth.

• Start procedure – I’ve learned to start the car with two fingers: one presses the start button, the other simultaneously hits the ASS button.

• Blind spot monitoring – the dead-angle indicator in the mirrors blinks all the time when I drive close to side guardrails. It picks up basically any obstacle and thinks there’s a car in the blind spot. That’s a bummer, and it happens on both sides.

• Keyless entry / locking – keyless entry works fine, but keyless locking is very insensitive. Often I need multiple touches on the locking area of the door handle, and sometimes I end up pulling out the key fob to lock the car.

• Lane keeping system – this is the thing I really hate. Why does it have to be ON by default? It scared me multiple times on icy roads when I forgot to turn it off. Nothing is worse than driving on ice and suddenly feeling weird feedback in the steering wheel. I really wish there was a way to disable it permanently.

• Lights – I was hoping the headlights would be more advanced. On my Ford Explorer, they transition from low beam to high beam with a gradual increase in intensity, while here it’s just ON / OFF. I’m not asking for anything super fancy like the adaptive headlights I had on my BMW 5 Series with split high beams that work around the car in front — but a smoother transition would be nice.

• Sound – the car sounds a bit better than my previous S550, probably thanks to the dual air intakes.

That’s it for now — those are my observations so far. Feel free to comment. 😎

You can deactivate the lane keeping system in the menu system. Go through your cars settings menu and go through it item by item. You'll find there's a lot to customize.

yes the screens don't bother me once I sit behind the wheel as well. I got used to them quick.

Keyless locking needs the door shut for a few seconds before you can activate it.

Enjoy your new car! :like:

I ordered my S650 after only seeing them online. I disregarded the negative comments about the screens but did go with the premium package that has the 2 monitors housed in 1 magnesium & glass enclosure. When I took delivery & stuck my head in the cockpit I thought to myself "Those are bad ass! Why were a lot of dudes talking smack about them?" I'm very happy with the new Mustang all the way around!

I have the 2025 GT 301A w PP & AE - M6… and couldn’t be happier with many of the things you loved as well:

1) Personally the screens are great. 💪
2) That sound- Oh man. Love the manual myself - I know it’s slower but I could care less it’s sooo great- and I run the Active Exhaust wide open and even when I’m on the highway cruising - I rarely leave 4th gear -3-4k rpms. I know I’m supposed to shift to 5th or 6th - it’s just the magic sound. Actual Sound system is terrible but I could care less. I’ll drive an hour and just turn the radio off and listen to tha exhaust / motor. Freaking amazing.
3) Handling- with the PP handles great.
4) Seats- very comfortable. Never owned a Mustang before- always been a Camaro guy- and when I’d test drive them they were slower and seats didn’t fit me well. So uncomfortable.
5) Exterior looks amazing to me. Sexy as hell. Even my wife who hates cars- is not a car person- is in lust with it.

no offense to any Ford Mustang fans- I’ve never been one.

all I got for Christmas was Mustang stuff for my garage shrine. I’m completely in love with this car. 7500+ RPMs???? Hell Yeah wowza! I don’t even care that I average 16MPG 😅😅😅😅😅

Nice review! I'm like you in that I also had an S550 prior to my S650. I'm still in the break in period, so I'm refraining from a comparison review until I've been able to drive it with more "authority." I do have some comments on some of your observations.

Why “hated”? Because after owning two S550s and one GT350, I was convinced I would never, ever be able to live with that atrocity — the pinnacle of ugliness — those two big screens.
And then you went and bought a yellow one, too. Kidding! I think it looks great!

I am completely fine with how they look from the driver's seat when the car is on. I think the graphics look pretty good, too. However, from outside the car looking into the interior, I still think the dash and screens look like they could be in any truck or SUV. I can live with that, though, because it's irrelevant once I'm driving.
10R80 transmission – this is tuned really very well. Where my S550 was probably the biggest disappointment, the S650 absolutely shines.
Agree! The 10r80 in my S550 was not as bad as what many others described with theirs, but in normal mode it did try too hard to keep the car in low rpms. The new one is tuned much better and doesn't do that. Sport and track modes were darn good in my S550, but the new one seems even more responsive and shifts more smoothly. I'm very happy with it so far.

Keyless locking is one of my only gripes about the design of the car. It takes a really really long time before the sensor area is ready to notice me touching it. If I close the door and touch it as if I were keyless locking my S550, I have to repeat that motion 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, maybe 10 times before it registers. Truly, it's often faster to fish out keys from a pocket. Other than that bad design, and perhaps the more important climate controls not having dedicated buttons, I love almost everything else. I only got full front PPF (+PPF racing stripes), and sometimes I wonder whether I should have sprung for the full PPF you did - that's my only occasional concern.

Looks like your GT350 is white with blue stripes? I'm obviously a fan!

I think the S550 was really bad. I reset the learning tables via diagnostics, it was a bit better for a while, but then it was bad after a while again, constantly under revving the engine. Even my attempts to teach the tranny to downshift early did not help. It was very stubborn in the way it kept low RPMs... :-)

Unfortunately no, in Europe you cannot disengage the lane keeping system. In the menu, there is only the option to select "Aid and alert" or "Aid". You cannot turn it off completely. You can turn it off for the current ride by pressing the button on the steering wheel, but it re-engages for the next ride.

But may be onto soemthing regarding the keyless locking. I just realized that it always works fine when I go to the trunk first, pickup my bag and then lock the car. It always struggles when I try locking the car immediately upon exiting the car. I will keep observing this... 👍

Ha! The first review of climbing snowy hills in a Mustang!

Apparently you chose the correct tires.
I will take my Explorer to that hill and check the incline. That hill is really scary and it was super dumb from me to go that way that day. It was fresh 3 inches of snow in the morning, no maintenance, so I was literally going through the snow as one of the first cars.

There's a button on the left side of the steering wheel for lane assist . Hitting it once should permanently turn it off until you turn it back on.
Unfortunately, that is not how it works here in Europe. One press activates a message on the screen that says "Press again to turn the lane keeping OFF". When you press again, it deactivates the lane keeping system, but only for this ride. Once you kill the engine, it re-engages again.

but did go with the premium package that has the 2 monitors housed in 1 magnesium & glass enclosure.
Same here, in Europe only Performance package is available, so we have all the goodies as standard.

no offense to any Ford Mustang fans- I’ve never been one.
Me neither, I was a BMW guy. But then I sold the 5 series after the warranty ended and decided to go for a Mustang, which I always considered a "show off" car. Boy was i wrong. It is one of the best cars in the world! Comfortable, fun to drive, reliable. It is literally one of the best. And that comes from someone who has already more than a million miles under his belt and who has driven almost all the mainstream cars.

I may end up hating them in a few years time when gremlins grow in them.
I fear that as well. If the screens start glitching, it is going to be an expensive repair...

And then you went and bought a yellow one, too. Kidding! I think it looks great!
I think the yellow is the best collor, combined with the black package... :)

Geez I love your S650 color combination! Is yours the 60th aniversary package in Wimbledon White? And yes, my GT350 is the Heritage Edition, it is 2020 in Wimbledon White with Guardsman blue stripes. I paid through the nose to get it, since it is already very expensive in the US and all the duties and taxes I had to pay to get it to Europe made it virtually impossible to sell without a loss if I need the money quick, but I consider it a collectible...

I'm happy to hear that I am not the only one struggling with the keyless locking. Compared to my s550s including the GT350, this is really not working well...

And regarding the full PPF - on my GT350 I have only the bikini cut. Im also thinking of having it re-wrapped for full coverage.

Enjoy your great color combo, I love it! :)

EDIT: just noticed in your profile it says Oxford White, but nevertheless, it looks gorgeous! 😉

That's interesting about Europe specs locking out some menu options like disabling lane keeping, especially since some Europeans have posted horror stories about it activating at a very bad time it shouldn't have.

Either maybe look into FORSCAN, or get used to hitting buttons every time you start the car. I've already gotten used to hitting the Drive Mode Selector twice to go into Custom Profile, which at least deactivates Auto-Stop, Traction control and sets Exhaust and steering preferences.

I've only had my car a couple weeks so still learning, but my custom mode settings don't allow me to change the steering. Only traction control and exhaust. It's in the menu but there is only one choice. Very annoying, because I want a Sport mode with normal steering and track exhaust.

Also, I didn't see where auto stop deactivation can be put into a custom drive mode. Is that something that requires ForsCan?
