Most US manufacturers have a gallon or two reserve capacity. The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel, so it is not a good practice to let it get too low very often. And there is also the fuel fill line and what it holds.

^ This, +1.

When driving on the street, it's not a good idea to run below 1/4 of a tank.

If on a course or track, many will start with a 1/2 tank, then top up on break.

Those with aftermarket pump setups or configurations might have other guidelines.

It's to help keep the pump protected, to cool it and to keep it from sucking nothing.

YMMV.

I would say you are very lucky.
I filled mine once and It took over 13 gallons.
Never again!
