So last week I was on business travel with a couple coworkers to Devil’s Lake, ND from Philly. Originally scheduled to fly back home on Sunday, but we were getting done Friday night so manager told us to change our plans to go back home on Saturday.
Original schedule had me driving to Grnad Forks, ND, then flight to Minneapolis then to Philly. New schedule on at had us going Grand Forks to Minn to Detroit to Philly.
ok Saturday morning we get up, drive the hour to Grand Forks. We get the flights to Minn and Detroit no problem. 3 hour layover in Detroit. We grab dinner and get to the gate. No gate agent….15 minutes after scheduled boarding time they cancel the flight. At this point nearly half the flights on the departures board are listed as cancelled and another 1/3 are showing delayed. Each of the 5 Delta help desk counters had lines 250 people deep.
i spend 45 minutes on hold waiting to get our corporate travel agent on the phone. Finally get through, nothing available until MONDAY NIGHT to get home. Ugh. No rental cars that night either. Can get a rental in the morning though. Ok she gets us hotel reservations. Coworker and I take Uber to the hotel around 10:30pm.
The hotel demands an $200 CASH security deposit before they will give us each room. Wtf?!? Fine. Take the cash out of the ATM in the lobby, get the room.
At this point I’m so frustrated and annoyed about the cash deposit and everything happening that I don’t sleep a wink. Turns out neither does my coworker.
We get up, check out, get our $200 back each, and get an Uber to Avis. Lot is full of cars. So I’m encouraged. I’m Avis preferred, but the displays showing which space your car is in are still Blue Screen of Death, so we go to that counter. The girl working it is utterly frazzled. Every car she tries to put people in isn’t coming. Up in the system as available. I’m 3rd in line. Once I get to the front she is telling us to literally just pick any car in the lot that has keys in it, come back and tell her the space number and it’s ours at our given rate (I was scheduled for economy class). I see an ecoboost 650 Mustang convertible nearby. She checks the system - “done, take it!”
I grab my coworker and we jump in and take off at 7:45am. As soon as we are on the highway I set the cruise for 81 mph and let her rip. Made a quick stop for bathroom and snacks/drinks near Toledo, a short detour stop at his parent’s house near Pittsburgh and then gas and food stop before getting back on the turnpike, and finally a stop near the Philly airport to fill it up with gas before turning it back in at Avis at 5pm on the dot.
, 581.7 miles, 8.5 hours (driving), avg speed 69 mph, 33.3 mpg.
i did ALL the driving. I was fueled by anger, spite, and 40oz of Red Bull! Thank god my coworker found an awesome playlist on Spotify that literally was every one of my favorite rock songs from the last 20 years.
Delta Airlines - you suck!!!!
