Dashcams - Rear View Mirror USB Port

Hey All,

Looking for recommendations for a Dashcam which supports the USB amperage the Rear View mirror puts out. I am not a fan of dangling wires to use the 12v port and want something which is more aesthetic.

I went full BlackVue build in mine (front and rear).

There are no dangling wires and I have a battery backup system running it for 19 hours of recording after car shut off (for those lovely times at the grocery store or parking lot where someone wants to park too close).

If you are getting a dashcam for shiz and giggles and YouTube stuff then no biggie but if you are getting one with a large feature set and a use case that is more geared towards keeping your car safe then I recommend a full proper install.

I'm actually going to be uninstalled it from my 2021 and having it reinstalled in my 2024.

Use case currently is for catching driving incidents just in case. Taking into account the car has motion sensors - parking incidents at my secure car spot is alright. She is not a grocery getter yet - so she ain’t going to be parked anywhere random anytime soon!

The viofo looks impressive - but seems like a lil bit of a big profile - any other recommendations for a low profile cam? I have no intentions of wanting a screen - I’ll switch SD cards during my drives anyway - so video overwrites is not a concern.

Absolutely man; happy to share.

I use the Blackvue 900X-2CH Plus Dash (front and rear) as well as the Blackvue 130X battery unit

I had trouble with the voltage based auto turn off + time limit features on the app as never seemed to read right and in the winter time, after a couple of weeks, battery would need charging. Since I installed the 130x this year I have had ZERO issues. It runs everything until that battery unit is out of juice and then it just turns off. Doesn't drain power from the battery passively.

The app is actually more refined now then it was when I first got the dashcam and having a web GUI is also really handy for reviewing and pulling video (I'm in IT, I'm a nerd at heart).

With my 130x on a full charge, which takes about 30-40 mins of driving, it will run BOTH cameras for roughly 19 hours. I could turn off the rear and the LED indicator lights and it may run longer but I have all bells and whistles going on and the LED is to let people know "this is recording".

When my current S550 is in my garage, and the camera is on, it automatically connects to my home network and then to the cloud so I can go to my office and log into the GUI and pull stuff off the dashcam.

Video quality is really good but this is an older model dashcam from like 2+ years ago. The new one is supposed to have different sensors which may or may not be as good I don't know.

I don't run the LTE version of it cause no point; if a thief was to take the car he would just rip that all off the dashboard and throw it out. If it's to record accidents then the other person would have had to kill me in order to reach the dash and take the SD card out and that is... unlikely.

If you go Blackvue, you're paying twice the price, and there are other brands with better image quality at a lower price. Google and YouTube is your friend.

If you're looking for the best quality image, especially at night, look for something with the Sony Starvis 2 sensor.

VIOFO A229 Pro Duo 4K UHD is what will likely go in mine. I have the VIOFO A129 Pro Duo 4K + 1080P in my F150 and it's been bulletproof.

If you want compact and no screen, look at the Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2.

You are welcome. You can pull stuff to your phone using the phone APP or you can use the GUI and pull once connected to Wifi

My goal is to get a camera that has a relatively small size/low profile, which leads me to focus on brands without a built-in screen.

That said, I have an even bigger challenge with my '24 GT Convertible, and that is finding a place to mount a rear camera that is both functional and no too odd looking. I've seen some pics of cameras mounted behind the front seat head rests as well as above the rear seat. None of those is appealing to me. I'm imagining an exterior cam on or near the license plate but it would have to integrate with the system I decide on. I've been researching that one for months without success. I know, first world problems.

The 900X Plus has a 1CH version which is just the front.

That being said there are Dashcams that have a rear facing camera. I think it's more geared towards the uber driver type demographic but it might meet your needs. Gonna be tough getting anything in the back of a vert without having it external and exposed to people and elements.

Watched that video! A very worthwhile watch. Not really surprising that there's only a couple of manufacturers and items are re-branded many times over. Due to having a vert, I may have to settle on a one-channel camera for now. At least until something else pops up on the market that meets my requirements. Thank you!

For those that doubt the validity of dashcam. Here is a person hard at work making sure they don’t have to work.

In a city close to me we have many new Canadians that will load up cars with all men over the age of 18 and drive around and literally try and cause low speed accidents. Then everyone goes for disability and then sits around doing nothing for years and years while your insurance rates go up.
