Dealer Test drive refusal?!?!

It doesn't matter. It is preposterous to assume you'll know a car with a 10 minute drive around the block. Furthermore, today's GT's and Dark Horses are not your father's vehicles. $50K+ for ANY vehicle is steep.

These aren't used vehicles sitting on the corner of Guido's Auto Sales. These are new vehicles that come with factory warranties.

Respectfully disagree. You can drive a nicely appointed GT and get a great feel for a DH, but driving the top DH won't get you within miles of driving a GTD.

FWIW, people who can afford a GTD don't test drive them. They already know what they are getting.

Today not 12 months ago. And no, people don't know what they are getting with a GTD but having owned (which I believe you are assuming) a Mustang DH or Shelby and the like, they likely have a better idea than someone that hasn't.

Today, tomorrow, or whenever: Most people who will own GTD don't want or need a test drive to help make up thier minds. Most people who will own a GT or DH will.

It's not a pissing contest of how many will or how many will not. The point you are missing is that there are both types of buyers. You are clearly in the camp of "test" drivers (aka abusers) which works great for buyers like me when it comes to dealers that are conscientious of that fact. Pound your sand! LOL

Buyer's of the GTD are most likely current or previous owners of Mustang so that matter couldn't be more relevant.

When I was shopping for the usual suspects I looked at a Boxster. It was a dismal week day and the sales girl asked me if I wanted to go for a test drive and I told her I'm just in the early stages and didn't want to waste her time. She looked at me, smiled, and said "well I want to go on a test drive. Care to join me?" Of course I did. I didn't like the new Boxster engine as it sounded like rice. She told me that's a common complaint. We had a nice test drive and some Dunkin Doughnuts cafe and parted ways. I actually sent 2 friends to her who ended up purchasing Porsches. This lady knows how to do business and I still have her name and phone number if I ever decide to purchase a Porsche.

No. I am saying people (enthusiasts) interested in something like a Dark Horse already know what they are looking for. The OP made it very clear he wanted to test drive a Dark Horse that was mostly everything that he wasn't looking for.

The dealer was not open to letting him (or anyone) test drive the vehicle and kudos to them for doing that because the car wasn't built for him to begin with, and he knew it. That is an abuser.

I appreciate it when a dealer is considerate of not putting miles on a specialty vehicle and serious buyers are going to applaud that.

For everyone (and everything) else, test driving is par for the course. These buyers are typically less discerning of the vehicle and more conscientious of price. So yeah, they're going to want to know what they are getting for $50K or more (and the miles racked up).

Just be here more frequently and you will notice that he has many forum fights with others.

I lean towards no test drive of vehicles at the top of their trim level. For me it's about engine break in. I have had good luck of breaking my engines in very carefully. I know people have different approaches but my strategy has worked for me so far. Any car with double digit miles is almost a no for me. 12, 14, 17 miles. I need peace of mind knowing an engine has not been "raced" while brand new. My DH had 2 miles on it when I purchased it.
