This (Dark Horse) is my first RWD and this is my first time driving it in snow. We generally don't get much, if any snow, where I live in Maryland. The three or so inches we got yesterday is the first I can remember in the last few years that was more than a dusting. Because we get so little snow, I replaced the summer. tires with all-season tires at the beginning of the winter. As can be predicted, my back end was all over the place coming back from dinner last night. Slippery Mode (I love that name) helped somewhat, but I still slid in a few places. I am thinking about getting actual winter tires, in case we get more snow this year. Other than the cost and the increased wear on the tires from not having much snow, would there be any downsides to winter tires in this case?

Winter tires will make a difference, but IMO practice would be better. Find an open space without any obstacles, i.e. poles, curbs, other cars, and get to know how your car handles...

A square setup of winter tires on a slimmer set of rims will perform much better if you're consistently below freezing seeing larger amounts of precipitation. Otherwise, if you see temps above freezing with the occasional dusting, you'll be fine with all season tires taking it easy.

I have some (2?) sets of winters available if you want to hoof it down to Manassass VA from where you are in MD.
