I have seen some reviews (not all, but some) on YouTube which complain loudly about numb steering. How bad or not bad is it, and what can be done to increase steering feel? I have ordered a GT Premium with the performance package and manual trans if that matters..

I’m one of many 7G members who’ve attended the Ford Performance Racing School. From my hands on experience; when the car is actually pushed hard on the track, “numb steering” isn’t an issue that surfaces.

YouTube videos need to get your views, likes, subs, and comments. To do that, YouTubers will often say things that aren’t true.

Not to be snarky, but did you test drive a car before you ordered it? The Mustang is going to be a big change from your WRX in feel, performance and ... well, everything. LOL

The steering is not "numb" but it certainly is not at the level of a Porsche. I test drove a WRX Sti once, and I honestly don't remember how the steering felt, but it did not leave a lasting impression good or bad. The on/off switch that they call an accelerator pedal and that droning exhaust will stay with me forever though.

That said, short of getting the Dark Horse, you did good ordering the car with the correct transmission along with the PP. I suspect that you will enjoy it.

A modern new car's electronic power assist will never feel as good as peak hydraulic steering, which is what I see a lot of the reviewers comparing it to.
Vs new BMW steering, which I am pretty familiar with and test drove Ms prior to pulling the trigger on my car, the steering is more direct feeling on the BMW. I am assuming the heavy Coyote up front leads to some of the steering set up challenges. But that was the only driving dynamic that was even a little better if you are looking for the manual muscle car experience. At least with the Brembos and Magnaride, these cars handle and brake very well and are highly engaging to drive.
(Carrera T was the other car I looked at, but at 100K more built out, no thx)
My 2 cents- the Mustang is best in its class and price point. I look forward to driving it every chance I can. You did good.

Just drive the car and you should get used to the steering. Contrary to popular myth, the car will go around a corner in spite of the slow transmission you ordered.

The steering did feel odd when I first drove a Mustang. Kind of artificially heavy after the Cupra. But you get used to it quickly, and it doesn't lack feel.
It feels manly.

I recently test drove an extensively modded S550 GT and immediately noticed it had a steering weight/ratio very similar to a stock Camaro or Corvette. Actually it felt heavier than those two cars, but in my mind it felt more precise taking turns at any speed, which felt absolutely amazing.

All this to ask, what mods would make the steering rack feel heavier than stock? (In my quick research, the mods I found on this car included Continental tires and either a 1- or 3-way coilover suspension).

The GT has three settings for steering, which change the weight/effort. Who knows how it was assigned on the car you drove?

Tires, alignment, camber plates, and maybe even a tune can affect steering feel.

Thanks for the reply. Whether on my EcoBoost or test driving GTs, I always keep the steering on Sport, and then switch up driving modes between Normal, Sport, and Sport+ depending on my mood. Up until this most recent test drive, I've only test driven stock EcoBoosts and GTs. The particular S550 I drove was a 2018 Roush Jackhammer: 2018 Roush JACKHAMMER MUSTANG – Roush Performance Products, Inc.
