even if it was a cat, there's 7 in National which can be overnighted, and its under the 8yr/80k mile emissions warranty, so the $2300 for the cat/manifold assembly, $350 core charge, and shipping are on Ford's dime
Yes, but still just a pain to go through and if there was a problem with the cats with these cars in general, Ford would be facing a massive recall issue

Ford faces recall issues all the time. just look at the millions of Explorers affected by the A-pillar trim flying off. im sure my situation is an isolated case, but im definitely going to be asking to see an inside image of the cat if it does need replacement

this transmission sucks. 1st and 2nd are hard to find compared to the other gears, and i stalled it twice when at a light and i couldnt find them so i tried and failed to launch from 3rd. i eventually gave up and just sat at a light in 1st with the clutch pressed in so it wasnt so bad... until i had to upshift to 2nd. i also went into crawl a few times instead of 2nd (but noticed before i let out the clutch) and that was stupid because i thought crawl used the lockout like reverse. anyways, a downstream O2 sensor has been ordered, hopefully overnighted. gonna try that before throwing in a cat. whether or not it works, Azureus is coming home tomorrow even if it still throws a P0430

we replaced the downstream O2 monitor and no dice, still reading funny. tech mentioned that there was a powder on the sensor when he took it out. next step is to replace the cat. so glad this is all under warranty because this is how its shaping up so far

if when the tech bore scopes the cat, it's melted, we might need to get Ford involved, because that indicates a tune issue, and mine isnt tuned. might even evolve into a new harvest recall in the worst case scenario is what i heard

How hard do you drive your car? Melting a cat without a tune or boost would require extreme driving daily with extreme temperatures going in and out of the catalytic converter

i've done some autocross events, and i have some fun with it. definitely not torturing it to the point where the cats melt, though. its my daily driver, but i think i drive like most other Mustang drivers do

old cat was taken off and cylinder 7 was darker than the rest. turns out one of the exhaust valve stems is leaking oil. tech is saying new cylinder head. cat was also heat damaged. definitely not what i was expecting or hoping for

i was thinking about asking the tech to quote me the cost of install for the billet crank sprocket and oil pump gear while he's down there, but i decided against it. saves me $500 and a headache of yelling at Boundary if for some reason something goes wrong with the parts. once im out of powertrain warranty, then ill consider it again, but i still dont think i understand why people say it has to be done

I think you asked this on another thread. But you only need to do it if you are gonna do boost. NA cars will not need it as the power with the revving is designed for it. And with boost, if you are revving it out frequently, like a lot of people do (and I suspect you as well if your cat already needs to be replaced due to heat), then you should definitely consider upgrading the OPGs. Here's an American Muscle article about it. Again it's just a precaution as the gen 5.1 (2015-2017) mustangs had that as a failure point for many boosted applications and the damage it does to the engine is catastrophic. You don't have to do it, but for the cost of installing and getting boost, it's a cheap insurance that the engine will be safer than if you didn't do it.

thank you for the clarification. i think when i do eventually supercharge it i am going to go without the OPGs and crank sprocket. also, the cat likely failed due to the oil that was leaking from the valve guide. revving it out should not cause cat issues on its own

Ya if you’re gonna boost it, I would recommend doing it. If you’re getting in installed by a mechanic/dealer, they should be able to do it at the same time as the supercharger install and save a bunch of time and money on your end by not having to do it twice

OPG's are only needed if you are raising the rev limiter and making more power than the kits originally came with. Whipple doesn't recommend them to run their kit. I never upgraded them. Some do say they are cheap insurance; IMO they are a highly pushed part most don't even need.

For cats, the stock Ford cats are pretty good. If you have a good tune with FI they will last a long time.
