Oil weight in warmer climates

Good day all, I live in a warm climate area and was wondering if anyone runs 20w-50 synthetic oils in such cases?

I wouldn't.

In the S197, there was three different weights specc'd for the exact same 5.0, with the heaviest weight being 5w-50 for the track pack, and 0w-20 for the base 5.0GT. Keep in mind this was the first gen of the 5.0, likely looser tolerances, etc etc.

I'd just stick to the 5w30 the mfg calls for. 5w-50 might be fine, but I wouldn't be comfortable telling you that for certain.

Well, I live in the hottest climate in the US and I run the factory 5w-30. Ive not heard of a different recommendation from Ford for warmer climates. Though 5w-50 was recommended for some track and racing applications on the S550. Not sure about the S650. Just stick to what Ford tells you.

Just a point on viscosity. While all, say, 5w-30 oils should be the same, their centistoke rating may differ. Centistoke is the tested viscosity of oils at 60C and 100C.
This difference is critical in motorcycle fork oil for example. I've seen 10w fork oils have as much as 50% difference in centistoke rating

My 2016 392 Hemi Challenger used either 0w40 or 5w40 as did my 2021 Porsche 911 Base 3.0 (Twin Turbo) Might be a good compromise between 30 and 50 ?

That's what I was wondering too. Our climate is very moderate, no extremes of heat or cold.

I live in Georgia, not too far from you. I run 5W-30 Motorcraft full synthetic.

I also have a Dark Horse. My oil temperature normally sits from 185 to 190° F.

That's what I was wondering too. Our climate is very moderate, no extremes of heat or cold.

It is 100 here in Central Texas today. I can gently drive my 24 6 speed around with A/C off and get oil up to 212 after perhaps 5 miles of country driving. One pull in second gear and it hits 240. To cool it off I turn on the A/C and drive gently and after approx. 3 miles it gets down to 212. I like to run Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30. I also like to get it HOT to burn off contaminates and water in my oil since it is only driven typically once a week or so. If your car is used daily I am sure you could just run it with A/C on and that should hold oil temp lower.

What are your oil temps on the track?

I do not know, unfortunately. I was not looking at it, and, to be honest, when I went, I was not aware of everything I am now (like desirable oil temperatures). I need to get back to the track and try to notice some of this stuff and report back. Sorry for the lack of info.

From other more experienced posters over at trackmustangsonline.com, though, the oil temperatures go up with experience, as does brake wear and so on, so I do not know how important my inexperienced oil temperatures might be for the discussion.

Just for why I asked, though, the oil cooler makes a big difference in cruising temperatures and in cooling off the oil once you start driving hard.
