Well this sucks. At the 2Km mark I discovered an nail in my rear tire. The local tire shop pulled the tire and put a patch in and it is holding air. They do not recommend tracking the car with this repair. After many phone calls I discovered that there are no Trofeos available in Canada.

What are your thoughts?

Drive the car this summer and track it next year on new rubber?

Buy new rubber now for the two rears and track it this summer?

I was given a price of $1500 for two cup 2’s of the same size installed, is this a good tire?

Have you tried searching on the internet "Pirelli Trofeo RS tires in Canada?"

I used to live in a fairly rural area. Back then, I don't think I ever had a car without plugs in the tires for nails. I often plugged them myself. Out of perhaps 50 to 60 plugs over the years, no I'm not joking, I've only once had one fail. And I just re-plugged it.

Sometimes all 4 tires had plugs, sometimes tires with more than one plug.

I used to drive through farmer's fields, be airborne with frequency, sped like a daemon, and threw a lot of torque at tires over the years. I often 4x4'd with cars through forest paths, and old railroad paths after the tracks had been pulled up.

I wouldn't bother replacing the tire, at all. As long as the plug is not on the sidewall, there's typically a LOT of structural strength to base of the tire, in fact it's getting harder and harder to shove a plug in due to how strong the belts are.

You've often got more than one steel belt, nylon, and one tiny round hole isn't really worth considering.

Understand that these plugs are legal to be installed, and insurance companies are OK with the 'average joe' having a plug put in, and then driving until the tires are bald on freeways at 90MPH on 4x4 trucks which go offroading.

I really see the track as having less wear on the tire than the road. Not many potholes on tracks.

So a counterpoint and view to advice you've already received.

it is perfectly fine to track a tire with a patch or a plug. A tire is an extremely strong item. One small puncture hole does not change that. I have tracked tires with plugs and or patches. Everyone has as nobody that picks up a nail on the way to the track is going to cancel their day because of a single nail. Michelin has even stated that 1 repair In Their tires is totally acceptable for track use.

I used to track sport bikes that had patches, if the puncture wasn't unusual in any way. Never had an issue. Maybe I am crazy but I don't think so.

Cup 2's are a great track day tyre, there is a 2R available too. Neither are great in the wet and cold.

Same here. I ran a plugged rear tyre for 1000km once, so that I could change both at the same time.
But I normally get an internal plug fitted.
