There are two, general rim/tire setups: staggered and squared.squared setup?
Staggered is when the front and rear rim and tire widths differ. Many drivers and factory rim/tire combos are staggered, often optimized for performance.
Squared is when all four rims and tires are the same size. A simpler setup, often selected for cars that spend most of their time on common surface roads and highway.
I run a squared rim/tire. The factory wheels and tires, while optimized for the track, didn't work very well for every day use. The uber-wide widths of the rims limited tire selections to virtually nothing but Summer tires. I couldn't rotate the tires.
Wanting to preserve the factory wheels in the best condition possible, I removed those the day I brought the car home. The Michelin Cup2 tires were gifted to someone who went to the track regularly. In their place, the squared setup, using a performance All-Season.
Topics such as this, things often involve compromises.
If I'd stayed with the factory combination, I would have gotten the most grip and performance. But I would have dealt with the additional road debris being kicked up against the car, not being able to drive well in the rain and not being able to drive at all below certain temps. With steering, front tires often wear faster and different than the rear. I couldn't rotate the factory rims, with their differing sizes.
The setup I'm using now, I have greater tire availability, can go out when temps are 32 F/0 C, it's raining, and I only rarely hear something hitting the side rocker panels. The compromise with this combination is I give up a those last few percentage points of handling and tire performance.
Over time, many drivers progress to two sets of rims/tires: 1) squared, A/S and a 2) staggered, Summer setup, then swap out as the Seasons demand. Those further north will run a Winter setup, with Blizzaks.
Back to the ramps, I'm going to attach a link involving wheel cribs. I recently tested out a set of Race Ramp cribs I'd purchased over the winter. They work very well.
