I have noticed that the speed sign recognition system is not always accurate.

For instance, on a recent trip to Montana the speed sign recognition system correctly detected a speed limit of 70 mph, however on one section of the highway the speed detection system showed a speed of 45 mph and my vehicle immediately slowed down to 45 mph on the highway. I reset the cruise control to the actual speed limit of 70 mph and continued on my way. There was no constuction or any lower speed limit signs on that stretch of highway. The speed limit on this entire section of highway was 70 mph. This unexpected reduction of speed happened several other times (on state highways and the interstate) during the 1,400-mile round trip.

As recently as yesterday, I was traveling on a county highway with a posted speed limit of 55. Twice during this 10-mile section of highway the speed sign recognition system went unexpectedly from 55 mph to 25 mph. Again, on this section of highway there was no speed limit sign indicating a slower posted speed limit on this entire section of highway.

During this trip yesterday I was using adaptive cruise control, and this happened with the lane keeping system turned on, and again when I turned it off.

Have any of you experienced this situation with the speed sign recognition system with the adaptive cruise control turned on?

I didn't realize it was reading speed limit signs. I figured it was something about programming the speed limits into the GPS.
If it’s controlled by external radio frequencies there goes the high speed chase.

I've never had the cruise control slow me down because of speed limit signs. Do you have some speed limiter on in your settings or something?

If it truly is using the car’s camera to read the sign, then welcome to the wonderful world of computer vision. It is NOT 100% accurate and perfect. Things like lighting angles, motion blur, lense flare, shadows, etc can cause inaccurate classification. (I do robotics research professionally and deal with this sort of thing all the time).

Try cleaning the windshield right in front of the camera. Could be you have some dirt or something in the way that is messing it up.

Beyond that I’d just go through the cars settings and turn off anything that links the detected speed limit with the cruise control. As it is the adaptive cruise pisses me off when somebody ahead of me is driving like a grandma….

This happened to me while using express lanes on the highway.
on the express lane, the max speed is 70, but on the regular highway is 55
so the car keeps reading both signs, alternating between one an the other.
Same if I'm going on the regular 55 max lane....it tends to speed up to 70 sometimes...

No, I do not have a speed limiter. However, I do have a tolerance setting which allows me to travel 2 miles per hour over the posted speed limit.

I prefer to drive my cars vs let them drive me…
I like your reply. But the issue is that without using this technology it would be very easy for me to end up with several speeding tickets. The only time that I do not use this feature is when I am traveling thru the mountains. On our trip to Montana, we drove thru the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming,

Thanks for your suggestions. I also have issues when I come up behind a very slow driver.

Thanks to all of you who responded. We have another trip coming up in a couple of days to spend some time with our daughter in Minnesota. I plan to take the Mustang to see if this issue persists, and then talk to someone in the service department at our local Ford dealership to see what they would advise when we get back from this trip.
