Ford is bleeding money big time due to their EV direction. Some have said that a bankruptcy is a possibility. That said, is an extended Ford warranty a bad bet? Or is an independent warranty safer?

As I understand it, you have until the original warranty expires to purchase an extended warranty. If that is true, I wouldn't rush to purchase the extended warranty, it's adds no additional protection right now.

That all being said, I don't see Ford going bankrupt any time soon.

Ford has been around 120 years and creates the best selling vehicle in America, they aren't going anywhere. If they were to file for Bankruptcy, they would just refresh their balance sheets, and generally speaking, nothing would change with their operations.

To answer your warranty question, there's no reason to buy a warranty other than the Ford one. A third-party warranty certainly not safer by any stretch of the imagination. You can apply your Ford Pass points towards the Ford warranty as well.

I agree with Interstellar. Third-party warranties are motivated to sell you a product, then do all they can to deny a claim. Paid claims hurt their bottom line, so your interests are not aligned.

Not that the manufacturer is much better, but at least you cut out the "who is going to pay for this" issue when the third-party directs you to the manufacturer and then the manufacturer points you right back to the extended warranty. I recommend the Ford extended warranty through Granger. Search this forum for more info.

During Ford's last reporting, their earnings were a bit lower than expected. Ford announced they were slow-walking some EV investments. Otherwise, they were OK.

Looking at their latest financials, Ford has $45B sitting in cash and short-term investments. The company most recently generated a net cash flow of close to $5B for the year.

Edit: Ford's most recent Balance Sheet shows $240B in assets with $197B in liabilities.

It's difficult to see how Ford would go from the above to declaring bankruptcy.

You can wait until your last few days of the existing factory warranty to buy an extended one.

Granger Ford offers the best deal: $50 over cost for a Ford plan. And you can purchase on-line at any time. With a Ford plan, what's covered and how is clear. Third-party payers? Not so much.

If the company goes belly up the warranty would be the least of the worries, otherwise, I think we may be able to ask the general maintenance company/division that question.

Ford broke themselves up into two companies. Ford and Ford Blue. Ford Blue is the electric company. In theory, they can BK the loser if they need to and electric is the loser so far!
