I have heard that an outdoor car cover will damage a car (convertible) by rubbing in the wind. And it is better just to leave the car parked ouside uncovered for the Minnesota winter.
Thoughts,?

Not sure what is worse. Having your ride exposed to the snow and ice or having a loose car cover flapping up against you stang. The cover should be fairly tight and not flop around. I used a car cover 1 year and it did destroyed the finish. It was a water repellent fabric that was not very water repellent. Moisture gore under the cover, baked the paint and caused water spots that could not be buffed out.

Given the option, I'd forgo an outside cover.

- Modern coatings and protectants can care for the finishes
- A cover can attract varmints (nice home), and vandals (must be something valuable here)
- The potential for moisture trapping, especially if on grass
- Physical damage from rubbing or slapping against the surfaces
- Loss of sight of the car and interior. Must remove cover to check, potentially scratching over time
- Manufacturers test for such things in all kinds of environments

Damage I have seen, is primarily caused by Owners which have never done anything to protect the finish, ever.

The following threads and POC could help identify items and tools to look after the car while resting.

If not doing so already, I'd attend some of the local, informal car show events. Chat up some of the Owners to see what they're doing, items they use. An alternative would be to discuss with a local detailing shop.

The money I'd spend on an outside cover, I'd rather that go to protectant supplies.

YMMV.

Convertible is the question. Had an older one, not in minn but in va, snow and ice held up ok but would still prefer a semi-rigid covering for storage. If going the storage route any chance it would fit in one of those public storage units for the winter?

I live across the river from MN in Hudson WI, and there are many indoor parking opportunities in the twin cities area that start showing up in October on various local Facebook groups.. I would spend the money on indoor storage instead of parking it outside.

Just my opinion.

There is a large number of images of paint damage from car covers used outdoors for any length of time. Use one at your own pearl.

Get yourself a "fitted" car cover, they're stretchy, fit snug and are lined to prevent paint damage. Look at the Covercraft's.
