If you run the bead of sealant just under the tape, it will adhere to the factory lip. I did mine this weekend and it came out great, to me, its just the right size.

I installed the same piece using the enclosed instructions, the only place where I deviated from them was to run the silicone bead just under the tape line. It adheres to the original lip that way. So far, it appears to be adhering well and looks great. I just didn't want anything too big.
