That's interesting. It's common and legal here. A parent insures the car and names the kid on the policy as a nominated driver. The kid will have a much higher excess. (deductible)
Same here, but I never had a car that emulated Jimmy Durante before. And, most cars had some form of substantial bumper.

I just looked on google maps, it looks like a doddle. One overnighter and, from what I've seen of US roads, it'll be safer and more relaxing than the same distance here.

This is wisdom, especially No: 4. Riding bikes hones your self preservation skills, and teaches you to learn to feel what a vehicle is doing. It's called seat of your pants driving, flying is the same I'm told. Awareness, both situational and self, plus anticipation will keep you alive.
