It’s on the back of my S650 GT and on my son’s S550 GT as well. Both are 6 speed manuals (Getrag) in case that matters. I’m asking because the black cap was popped up on my son’s. He’s since pushed it back down.

Greetings,
The black bulb looks like an evap canister.

Where is this located? Is it on the driver side of the vehicle?

Where is this located??
In the back of the upper intake near the firewall. That back bulb is small.

Found it thanks to Levittown Ford online parts catalog. Back to why I want to know what it is/does, my son’s black cap was popped up. The black cap does seem to spin like a volume control knob.

Found this hope it helps?
The Ford Intake Manifold Runner (IMR) solenoid—also known as the IMRC (Intake Manifold Runner Control) solenoid—dynamically adjusts airflow into your engine to optimize power, torque, and fuel efficiency. It acts as a traffic director for air, altering the path it takes to perfectly match engine speed and load.

I’m trying to figure out why the black top cap was popped up and spinning on my son’s S550. No “P” codes, no performance problems, nothing amiss. So it’s more of a detailed question about the part itself, which is relatively cheap and easy to replace now that I/we know what it is.

If it's not effecting engine performance, I wouldn't worry about it until it does!

Here's what AI has to say about this. Everything in bold below dashed line is AI.

- Specifically mentions the cap you're questioning (specifics to the cap unvetted). No question the part description is correct.

- Assuming AI is correct on the cap - If no vacuum leak is present on your son's S-550 I see no reason to contemplate replacement. Fairly easy to confirm no vacuum leak.

- I too wonder what would cause the cap to be pop up as you described. How far up was the cap prior to pushing back down? Vacuum would not cause the cap to pop up.

Edit add - 2024 year is referenced below. Same applies to S-550's.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* "Here is exactly why that top connector is capped on your 2024 Mustang GT:
  • Shared Part Bin: Ford uses the exact same base solenoid across multiple vehicles. While an F-150 or a different application might require both ports for extra vacuum hoses or an air shutoff valve, the Coyote engine in the 2024 Mustang GT only requires a specific single vacuum configuration.
  • Factory Manufacturing Cap: The cap ensures the solenoid’s internal vacuum chamber remains sealed. If you were to remove this cap, it would cause an unmetered air leak, triggering a check engine light or rough idle.
  • Not for Wiring: The solenoid connects to the engine wiring harness at its main electrical plug to receive signals from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to adjust valve positions. The unused port on top is purely pneumatic (air) and is not an electrical terminal."
