Ford Announcement (by Joe Bellino is Mustang GTD brand manager):

New Ford Mustang GTD Competition Clocks Record Time at Nürburgring

S650 Mustang 6:40.8 Nurburgring Lap Time: New Mustang GTD COMPETITION Crushes Own Record šŸ Mustang_GTD_Competition_05

April 17, 2026

After becoming the first car from an American brand to break the 7-minute barrier at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the Mustang GTD shattered its own record with a new 6:40.835 lap time.

With this achievement, Ford now claims the two fastest Nürburgring lap times of any American brand, including the Ford GT Mk IV.

Driven once again by Ford Racing and Multimatic factory driver Dirk Müller, the Mustang GTD Competition secured the sixth fastest time on the Nürburgring Pre-Production / Prototype Class leaderboard.

Proving just how capable the Mustang GTD Competition is, Ford Racing engineer Steve Thompson also piloted the GTD Competition to a time of 6:49.337 around the Nürburgring – faster than Müller’s original record. Thompson has modest driving experience at the "Green Hell," having cumulatively driven the Nürburgring fewer than 40 laps.

Record Lap Video:

To shave more than 11 seconds off Mustang GTD’s benchmark, the team relentlessly focused on four key areas:
  • More Power: Hardware updates and aggressive tuning push Mustang GTD Competition’s supercharged 5.2-liter V8 to a targeted engine output beyond the original Mustang GTD’s 815 horsepower

  • Advanced Aerodynamics: Building on the existing Drag Reduction System (DRS), the Mustang GTD Competition adds rear wing modifications, secondary front dive planes, and rear carbon fiber aero discs to increase total downforce without sacrificing efficiency or aero balance

  • Increased Grip: New high-performance tires

  • Weight Reduction: New magnesium wheels, new carbon bucket seats, lighter damper system and additional actions help reduce weight

Mustang GTD Applications Reopening

Recognizing the exclusivity of this achievement, the GTD Competition will only be offered in the future as a special edition, street legal model available in strictly limited, serialized quantities.

To celebrate this historic feat and the 62nd birthday of the Mustang, Ford is reopening the application window today for North American customers who want an opportunity to buy the most advanced and powerful street-legal Mustang ever assembled.

I'm copying my post over from the other thread in case one of them gets closed or they're merged:

That's a great achievement! I'm glad that they included that it's a street legal variant, so we don't have the endless arguing here about that. I still think it's asinine that you have to apply to Ford to give them a ridiculous sum of money, but whatever. I'd also like to know how much this will cost since the reality of the GTD is that the 325K base doesn't include the regular track pack (or whatever it's called), so they're really 400K+ cars before the Competition came out.

Also, just imagine what this car would do if Ford had gone all-out for the 7th gen and wasn't using an old steel unibody from over a decade ago. It would shave significant weight if they could use aluminum. Of course, that would likely increase the price as well.

Why do we have to regurgitate this over and over again? The application process is what it is and it’s not changing so how about we just move on. Also many GTD’s are running $500k plus so unless you’re in the market for a half million dollar car complaining about its cost is pointless.

Just imagine for a moment that instead of bringing up what Ford could have, should have done we just enjoy what they’ve accomplished.

PS. Congratulations Ford and the GT and GTD teams for their incredible achievement's.

This is fucking insane. When the vids were first taken down, I was worried the actual time was slower than the low 6:40s. That Ford wanted to kill the rumor of a 6:42 time so that when they posted like a 6:47 they didn't look bad. But the opposite is true.

Well, you’ll note that the first thing I said was that it was a great achievement, and the comment about if it had an aluminum unibody wasn’t a dig—it’s a compliment that they achieved this even with an old steel unibody car.

But I still stand by the fact that it’s dumb as hell that you have to apply to get the car. I think we should be able to celebrate what they’ve achieved but still call them out for stuff we think is dumb. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

I get it, I do. I also wish that they would sometimes do things differently. But there is a time and place. This should be a congratulatory thread. I would just like to keep it that way, at least for a day or two.
