I'm not used to this storage thing either! Hopefully the spring thaw in NE PA will happen sooner than later,,,these ice glaciers gotta melt at some point but we've had some of our biggest snow storms in March. :frown: Can't wait to take that pony out on some clean dry roads with the windows down the stereo cracked up!

We're having a really crappy summer down here, but I'm still glad I don't have to deal with snow,
and looking at poor Bonnie itching to sprea.....sorry, stretch her legs.

Clearly not rust belt residents ...:cwl:

The only solution is, winter beater.
Correct (at least for me) not in the rust area. However, life is too short to drive a boring car.

Don't save it for the next guy.

I don't think you quite understand. If you drive it year round around here , there is no "next guy". Unless you are talking about the scrap man.
lol.

Ditto. Besides the DH, I ride motorcycles. Thought about taking a bike out yesterday/today but due to the salt as you say, nope.

Storing. Battery tenders, yes. My bikes - I never start during the off season unless I'm going to actually ride. The DH, I move it a bit in the garage with its over inflated tires to prevent flat spots but do start it every now and then (not as often as the below says) because...

That's just to avoid the battery messages. Lots of dumb stuff in the manual like the maintenance schedule

ICE vehicles don't do well just sitting as if they were in a museum! My solution is simple—drive it year round! I do!
Agreed! I didn't pay all that money to have it sit in the garage. That isn't what it was designed for! That being said, I don't care about temperature, but I do care about moisture. Since the big snowstorm, I've driven my car a few times but couldn't the last two days because now the snow is starting to melt. Glenn

Don't drive it in wet conditions. At least that is my non-scientific determination. Glenn

Jeflon,
I feel ya. I'm less than 30 miles from Pennsburg. Temps this week are going to be better, and we're supposed to get rain, so hopefully the snow will be leaving soon. Snow in March is definitely a possibility! Glenn

Always one in the crowd. I tend to hold my vehicle for an average of 2 decades. I am the next guy that I am saving it for.

Perhaps... I was under the impression that with modern treatments, body rust was largely a thing of the past.

I've been storing Corvettes (and now my Mustang) for 25 years. Never had a problem. The weather has been pretty nice here in Northern Illinois the past few days, but there's still a bunch of salt on the roads. Our spring-like weather will be short lived. I'm sure we'll see more snow. I saw a McLaren parked way out at Walmart yesterday. I'm tempted to take out the Mustang but just can't do it.
Same here. This fools spring is just about over and still a ton of salt on the roads. Mine sits in the garage till the rains wash it all away. Tundra does the daily driving just fine for me. A summer toy is a summer toy.

I would argue , older cars were far less susceptible to rust. Yes they do have far superior coatings today , which is likely why they get away with cheap thin hardened steel.

Many DD pickups here in Wisconsin have frames bust/rust in half around 20 yrs. Washing it every day does little to nothing.

Today vehicles are built to collapse like a soda can when in an accident , so they are built thin. Then add the low iron high carbon factor of the steel which accelerates the cancer.

"Old Iron" lasts and lasts... If you crash though , you don't 😬

I've heard "modern cars don't rust" a lot on the internet. Not sure where that comes from. And I've also heard "automakers started galvanizing steel body panels in the 80's so that's when they quit rusting". I guess that explains why there are so many rust free fox bodies and SN95's out there...

There's a lot more plastic (or whatever it is) and aluminum on today's cars. Fenders, control arms, etc. That stuff doesn't rust. Aluminum 'corrodes' but it looks way better than rusted steel/iron.

You also have a lot of plastic covers on the underside of the body. And things like fender liners. Plastic trim at the bottom of the car. Those are all great as long as they don't trap moisture/salt.

The bare metal (or poorly painted/coated) parts will 'rust' first. Usually stuff around the brakes and suspension that aren't aluminum, K member, support braces, driveshaft, and rear end housing (if cast iron).

The biggest example of this is the bumper braces/supports or whatever they were called on the 2005-2014 cars. There are aftermarket replacements made because of how fast those rusted out.
S650 Mustang Well I am not used to this storage thing support bar rusted

The story I always go back to is when the WRX first became popular, all the guys were driving them around in the snow making fun of the Mustang guys because they put theirs away for the winter. And eventually they all started rusting out in the same places between the fenders and the body.

I'm also amazed at how fast today's trucks start rusting on the cab corners, fenders, etc. Then again maybe I'm not. People just end up sticking cheap fender flares on the used ones so it's not so obvious.
