Business Insider reports Ford CEO, Jim Farley, has been driving a Xiaomi Speed Ultra 7 for approximately 6 months.

"I don't like talking about the competition so much, but I drive the Xiaomi," Farley said while speaking to the British presenter Robert Llewellyn on "The Fully Charged Podcast."

"We flew one from Shanghai to Chicago, and I've been driving it for six months now, and I don't want to give it up," Farley continued.

Sure, any smart business person will check out, or have checked out, the competition, to see what they’re about, and to provide insight into where their own product/service needs to be positioned to be the winner.

It’s also true that frequently appearances can count for more than they should.

Is this one of those cases?

I'd love to know how he got it into the country and past the Feds who routinely refuse to allow foreign cars that are not certified to US specifications (one company had to recall their cars because the high beam indicator was not to US standards).

Big things would be certification to emissions standards and 5 MPH crash requirements.

AFAIK that car is for Chinese domestic market sales only

Still has to get past the Feds, Ford M plate or not, they do let grey market cars in except under very limited circumstances, letting the CEO of Ford have one for a toy is not going to pass muster with the Feds

Now that this has gotten out, and is not a very good look for the company, I bet it gets parked by the close of business Friday

My money's on it was a Ford Asia purchase that was transfered to Ford NA for the US EV team to look into for inspiration on how to improve their own products.

~14 tons of fentanyl comes across the border every year. You think the feds are gonna stop one Chinese EV for the CEO of Ford due to certification/emissions?

Charging stations of tomorrow are gas stations of today. Although i do pass charging stations daily and don’t need to stop.

Even though charging stations are being added at a good rate, I still have found it difficult to get consistent charging when driving EVs as rentals in non California cities. A good percentage of them are broken/in maintenance or being taken by other cars sitting there for hours. The only way I'd get an EV is if I had a home where I could install a 240V charger. Otherwise, living in an apartment complex without EV charging is terrible.

I guess no one wants to talk about 'why' he might want to test one directly? Few know, that Henry Ford II actually drove a disguised GM product for several weeks. Why did he do it? Or why do you think GM has a Mustang GT on their test track? Instead of thinking all things are apophenian, look at the logical side instead!

I'm afraid I fail to see what the big deal is with this.
I agree, and I have no idea how big or small a deal "this" is, but............................let's say you're offering me and the other forum members a product or service, and spending big advertising bucks to do it. Yet; you publicly state you're using a competitors product/service because you prefer it. Say what?!

Some, not as not as understanding and compassionate as myself 🤣 , might think you've shot your advertising budget and product/service in the foot.

There's a lot of image and perception involved in selling anything.

Ya i think it's fine to drive other companies' cars, but it is funny to say you prefer it. Basically saying your own product is not up to snuff with other products. On one hand, it is admirable for a CEO to have that humility, but on the other hand, it doesn't instill a lot of confidence in your own product, especially one where you're already years behind the competition in innovation as well as sales
