Am I pushing my luck by relying on Waze only ? Or, should I drop the money on a decent radar detector ?

I'd say it depends on how uncontrolled your speeding is.
Keep in mind that if you're nicked for speeding, it's a moving violation and will cost you $$$ for the next 3-5 years on insurance.

Waze is good on roads often traveled. a radar detector is a fantastic idea. i recommend the Uniden R7 or R8. or if you have the money and want LiDAR protection too, the Uniden R9

Waze depends on people reporting seeing cops. That's not very reliable, and a lot of the cops are rolling. Usually, the cops are gone when you get to the area they reported. But then, Boy George gave me wrong directions lol 😂 I have better luck with my radar detector. I know which alert is grocery stores and which are cops.

I was on a trip using the on-board navigation and it identified where there were speedtraps. At first I was wondering why it would tell me about traffic control points. Once alerted, I would notice a cop laying in wait. Not sure if that is by design, but that is my experience.

I run the Uniden R4 with the "highway radar" app map overlay on my phone, which tracks all cops using open source (Waze) to include airplanes. Google Vortex radar that guy does Detector reviews and will also explain how highway radar app works if your interested.
