Once upon a time, KBB was supposed to reflect that, but their trade-in values are largely pure fantasy.Trade in sites also cater to dealers. So there's that.
I'm convinced now it's to drive people to dealerships who will find out the KBB numbers are wildly inflated, but will often make the deal anyway.
CarMax has been consistent but their numbers can sometimes be inflated if their internal data shows they can quickly flip a car like that in their dealerships.
When I recently had to sell my Dad's car after his passing, CarMax gave me $2000 more for his base Hyundai Sonata than any other source in town, and cut me a check for that exact amount when I took it in. (I thought they would lower it when I took it in and say it was due to condition, but nope, they were happy to honor the quote.)
CarMax even paid for an Uber home for me, which a local Porsche dealer would not do when I sold them my Cayman S until I made the sale contingent upon them doing so.
