Has anyone hardwired their radar detector using mirror taps? If so, what wires do you plug into. Looking for switched power

I tested the voltage coming from the USB behind the mirror, it is 5v…not enough to power the radar detector. Also tested the voltage in a connector under the plastic behind the mirror on the windshield and it was 7v…still not enough.

Is there not a connector with 5 or 6 wires going into the back of the mirror?

How much power does your radar detector need?
I was hoping to use the USB port instead of a mirror tap.

Iā€˜ve never tested the available voltage in any of the eight or so cars I’ve used mirror taps on. They always just worked.

I tried both the 5v and the 7v, it powers the uniden R3 for a spilt second and then fails.

That’s the same detector I have. It’s paid for itself more times than I can count.

your best bet is running a fuse tap from the BCM

Uniden R3. I actually have one in my vehicle and one in my wife’s Bronco.
My son and my brother also have them.
My wife and I have the same set up- she has a bronco, and I have a DH. Good choices!

I was able to successfully do a mirror tap for my radar detector. I saw someone do it with a Mach E and when I pulled back the plastic housing I saw the same wiring configuration for the Mustang. I used the white for the hot (red) and the black for the ground and my radar detector now powers up when I start the vehicle. I have a GT Premium.

For reference, this was the thread I saw on the Mach E site: https://www.macheforum.com/site/thr...cam-switched-12v-diy-writeup.3952/post-122401

It works great, no issues. I have an Escort brand that I use

i just tried pretty hard (pulled pretty firmly on the housing) on my Dark Horse. The only thing I could get off was the little tab in the front middle. Any more advice?

I had used a clip tool to push them in so that I could pull it down. It you do pull on it, I would try to get as close to the tabs as you can. It should come down.

Just installed a mirror tap for my R3 on my 24’ GT today. It was pretty easy, thank you for this!
