Oil weight in warmer climates

The performance pack or DH come with the extra oil cooler that from what I read bring the temp waaaay down in daily driving. Mine runs 225 approx. when taking it easy. I have seen some folks with the extra cooler run around 190. Pretty big difference, for sure. If you run your car on a track (A/C off-of course) perhaps when you are easing up just to cool things down you might consider running A/C on to bring temps down more quickly.

Just for why I asked, though, the oil cooler makes a big difference in cruising temperatures and in cooling off the oil once you start driving hard.

I went back and saw that you have a DH. I would love to know what temps you hit on the track!

I do not know, unfortunately. I was not looking at it, and, to be honest, when I went, I was not aware of everything I am now (like desirable oil temperatures). I need to get back to the track and try to notice some of this stuff and report back. Sorry for the lack of info.

From other more experienced posters over at trackmustangsonline.com, though, the oil temperatures go up with experience, as does brake wear and so on, so I do not know how important my inexperienced oil temperatures might be for the discussion.

I think you'd be surprised how much higher those temps will go with hard driving/track use.

Actually, there was a discussion a while back where it was discovered these cars run cooler with the AC on and hotter when its off. I know that sounds counter intuitive, but apparently the fans run faster with the AC on and helps with overall cooling.

I have personally experimented, and can confirm my car runs slightly warmer when cruising with the AC off.

It is 100 here in Central Texas today. I can gently drive my 24 6 speed around with A/C off and get oil up to 212 after perhaps 5 miles of country driving. One pull in second gear and it hits 240. To cool it off I turn on the A/C and drive gently and after approx. 3 miles it gets down to 212. I like to run Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30. I also like to get it HOT to burn off contaminates and water in my oil since it is only driven typically once a week or so. If your car is used daily I am sure you could just run it with A/C on and that should hold oil temp lower.

212⁰ is about what I run here in Phoenix while cruising.

No, I wouldn't. I see what others are hitting, and some of the more experienced guys are having issues even with the cooler.

There are larger oil coolers out there if this becomes a problem. Several very fast Coyotes running a large Setrab oil cooler are running very cool oil on track. The only guys running hot with those, of which I am aware, are the GT4 professional drivers.

So I cannot over drive the OEM oil cooler now, at my level. If I ever get to tracking regularly enough that I can, then I will add another oil cooler in parallel to the Ford unit. I doubt I will ever get fast enough to overdrive that. I am simply too old and do not have enough spare time or money to get that fast with a street car that I take to the track.

You have a Dark Horse.

This means you have an auxiliary oil cooler in front of the driver side tire.

I live in Georgia, not too far from you. I run 5W-30 Motorcraft full synthetic.

I also have a Dark Horse. My oil temperature normally sits from 185 to 190° F.

I have a Hennessey H850 Dark Horse, runs a little warmer why I asked.

When you say track, are you talking about a drag strip or are you talking about a racetrack, like Road Atlanta, Roebling Road, or Carolina Motorsports Park?
