If you think the exhaust is contributing, you could try using that reflective heat shield tape on the heat shields for your exhaust back there.

The main issue is, it’s an unvented box. Heat buildup without relief, that’s why those window vents work so well (relatively speaking of course). You could try adding some r-rated insulating material to the bottom side of the trunk lid but otherwise, like you mentioned, using the lowered back seat method may be the most cost effective.

Getting my entire trunk coated in sound deadening material, so I'm hoping that makes a difference heat wise. Should provide some insulation.
I do notice that the trunk area is definitely warmer at times.

The windows have Llumar Stratos tint, and that made a huge difference in blocking out heat. You look at sunlight hitting your skin, but feel no heat at all.

So I just checked mine after driving 35 minutes. Center of trunk was 85 and ye left and right sides were 95 and 94. Spare tire area was 107. So I would say exhaust has got to be the issue. It is 83 outside right now. Car has been sitting for less than 10 minutes

Spare tire area under the underlay? How would exhaust cause heat when car is parked?

He has only been sitting for a few minutes - after driving it.

The exhaust is still very hot for a few minutes after driving. I know. I have touched it and gotten blisters.

In relation to the op…. While driving did the trunk get hot or while standing in the sun?
