Antifreeze Smell

Have under 300 miles on the DH so far. Buddy came over today and he wanted to see it. After running for a little bit in the garage we both noticed an antifreeze smell. I marked the overflow today to keep an eye on the level. Nothing on the garage floor and nothing noticed under the hood. Anyone else notice this with their new DH or are there any common issues I should be aware of?

I'm also new. Approx 150 miles.. No funny smells here though. Yesterday I checked all my fluids. Only thing I needed was Rain-X. New car smells are not uncommon.

Take a peek around with a flashlight. If you can get underneath the car that's a good idea too. I just sold 2 Subarus. One had 187,000 miles. Although I did a lot of maintenance, I caught stuff early doing visual inspections too. Never hurts to take a quick peek at the engine compartment and under carriage.

We've had a few threads about fluctuating coolant levels, downward-trending coolant or coolant smells.

The smell of coolant seems to be the most common characteristic. At a given pressure, the coolant overflow tank will gas-off to the engine. If you study your overflow tank, there should be a hose from it to a valve and later the engine's intake. When relaxed, the system also allows for atmospheric pressure to fill any voids. The intake is open. Any gases in the intake tube can vent to the atmosphere.

Some have noted the wide range their coolant levels can fluctuate over time. This could be a characteristic of the engine and the cooling system.

Others have posted of coolant levels trending downward, especially on newer builds. It's been more of a topping-up routine until the matter stabilizes.

The V8s in the 7Gs are the 4th generation of Coyote and I believe that has something to do with it. I do not think the engine is flawed. But I do think there are new engine coolant passages, new factory fill processes, temperature ranges, operating characteristics, etc., with the varying fluid levels and smells being a result.

I encourage everyone to check fluids, tires (pressure and tread), under the hood and under the car once a month. Note anything of interest. See if anything trends out. Over time, virtually every item seen or measured will become a trait of that vehicle. A few cars will need dealer attention. For those that do, the notes and records maintained by the owner will facilitate any discussions.

I did an oil change at just over 1k miles and noticed coolant on the top part of the underbelly tray. Looked up and found what I assume is an overflow hose. I also noticed dried coolant around the coolant reservoir. Maybe an overheat or overflow. Nothing on the dash though. Stage 1 whipple installed.

It's funny this thread just started because recently I've noticed a coolant smell very slight but there after pulling into driveway. Its very faint and I'm not worried but its there.

Mine definitely has a smell and a leak.

The dealer confirmed there is dried coolant at the front driver side of the block.

To repair it, I have to leave it for "at least" 3 weeks before they can even diagnose it. It will sit on their lot for 3 weeks doing nothing. I cannot bring it back in 3 weeks if it is a warranty repair.




Google seems to indicate the upper radiator hose connection, that Y shaped plastic piece, is a common leak location.

But I have not gone in to find out. And I don't really want to diagnose and repair myself for a car under warranty.

First off sorry to hear your having issues with your ride. So have they said what will be done to fix your car? How did you determine it is leaking? Im curious because I have been noticing a coolant smell after pulling into driveway. So im looking out for any other signs.

Open the hood. Take a photograph of your coolant reservoir.

Wait a few weeks. Take another photograph.

Compare the photos.

That is what I did.

Mine is a slow, but steady, coolant leak. I can smell it. The coolant level goes down. I ordered the 50/50 coolant, Motorcraft, in the gallon jug from Rockauto.com. It has been months, but I have used more than half a gallon.

Plus, when I took it in to the dealer for an oil change, I asked them tot take a look. They noticed staining on the front driver's side of the block, meaning dried coolant.

Seems to be a common thing that coolant slowly disappears on these S650s. I've personally experienced this on both S650 Ecoboosts and GTs that I've owned. Because it was across different engines (and different model years), I think it's most likely some defect in the design of the shared coolant hoses/overflow tank or how they seal. I've also noticed little white spots in the engine bay in different places, though haven't done the detective work to trace things down. I found I had to add coolant at around the 5K-10K mile range (couple times a year basically)
