It's coming through your audio whether your system is on or not. Ford did a really good job of hiding it through the APIM but it's always there. I'm not saying it's not sounding great outside the vehicle and I love how mine sounds! I'm just saying, what you're hearing inside is modified somewhat. It's not like total v8 exhaust sounds added like with what they do on the V6. It's more like a supplemental growl. It's hard to explain. If you try to listen to it with it turned on, you'll never notice. But the second you shut it off, you'll be amazed at the difference.
You mean not like: ?

I think confusion is you guys are having is because you are watching the valves at idle. My understanding is the valves move with throttle input on all modes except Track. Other modes start a certain amount open and then open and close with input through the RPM band. Sport mode may is open all the way at idle, but does move during driving. I believe track is open all the time and doesn't move.

Throttle input effecting AE mayThis may also explain why some people notice more of a difference between drive modes than others. It depends on how you drive.

This video may help -

EDIT: there was also a good discussion on this in the 6G forum. https://www.mustang6g.com/forums/threads/how-does-the-active-exhaust-work.181432/
AZ_Ryan,

Thank you! Your post cut right through all of the BS. There is obviously a very different valve action for each mode, with Track Mode being the only one fully open 100% of the time. Somebody really went all out for that video.

The surprising thing is how much activity there is in the valves. In everything but Track Mode, the valves are busy doing something, all the time. I would have thought prior to watching this video, that there were simply four static settings. Closed, a little open, open a little more, and wide open, but no, with the exception of the last one, (Track Mode is wide open all the time), the valves are opening, closing, opening part way, depending upon throttle position, all controlled electronically. Some group of engineers were very busy designing the activity of those valves.

Now I am going to go and read the mustang6g.com thread you linked.

UPDATE: The thread did not really add much, but that video is worth its weight in gold, thanks! :)

Wow what a thread this has become.

Yes, thanks for all the insights.

I signed on mine last night - it will be here next Saturday, and is indeed a 301A w/ PP & Active Exhaust. Will be interesting to understand more about exactly how the exhaust works.

the fake exhaust sound through the audio system isn't just an ecoboost thing. The 5.0 has it as well and when you have AE, it actually changes along with the valve position. It really makes a big difference too. I turned mine off with FORScan because I'm adding a sub and amp and didn't want the sound amplified. I was shocked at how much was coming from the speakers/sub as opposed to the actual exhaust. With the top/windows up I can barely hear the difference between the top 3 modes (although yes, they are still much louder than quiet mode.) I was kind of disappointed because it sounded a lot better before but now that I know it wasn't all real, I couldn't bring myself to turn it back on... sub/amp or not...
Is this true???

Has anybody captured this inside?

I think I might prefer it "off," but it is hard to tell without experiencing the difference. I find the engine too loud inside the cockpit of my Dark Horse sometimes. I might prefer it quieter inside. Getting rid of any additional noise coming through the audio system would probably be a great benefit to me and make it easier to listen to things quietly on the audio system (you know, things that you actually play on the audio system, like music or podcasts). It seems turning off such a "feature" as fake engine noises, "Vroom, vroom," his would increase the quality of the audio when listening, too.

Gee, why didn't they include sounds of squealing rubber when pulling away from a stoplight or in turns? It could be like driving with your three year old. "Vroom, vroom, screeeeeech, waaaah, waaaaah! Burble burble."

The way my wife described the difference was this. Before I shut off the added sounds with forscan, it sounded more deep like a rumble. Not it's more raspy and high pitched. Still really cool. Just less muscle car and more super car. Some would say that's better.
Now I am more curious than ever.

What's an APIM, and how do you know this?
Please follow up with answers to this? Thank you.

To answer questions, yes it's true. I wouldn't believe it either but I've shut off the ESE (Engine Sound Enhancement) with FORScan and the difference is noticeable. There is a thread in the FORScan area here on the forums that explains how to do it. The APIM is the "Accessory Protocol Interface Module." Google describes it better than I could have so here's a copy and paste:

"The Ford APIM is a crucial component of the Ford SYNC system. It acts as a small computer module, handling various vehicle functions and communication between different modules. Specifically, it manages inputs from sensors, controls, and other modules to enable features like Bluetooth connectivity, audio system controls, navigation, and even features like heated seats and park assist"

Do you happen to have a before and after recording since it’s perceptible?

I wish I did. To be honest, I was on the phone with my buddy in TN who is an absolute FORScan guru making a bunch of changes. So, I was just entering values as fast as he was reeling them off to disable things that annoyed me. I wasn't even sure the ESE would make that big of a difference or any at all so I didn't think to record before and after. I also got rid of the seatbelt chime (owners manual methods wouldn't work for me), triple thump at startup, door ajar chime, and seatbelt splash screen.

Here is the thread about disabling ANC and ESE: https://www.mustang7g.com/forums/threads/disabling-anc-and-ese-via-forscan-25-full-steps.168802/

Bummer, can’t do a quick revert, capture and restore? Hopefully someone is able to grab it at some point.

I can next time I'm in there. I have to go back in at some point to turn on the auto lock toggle so I can prevent the car from auto locking in motion. Not sure how well it would show up on a phone recording but I would try. I am an Apple guy and FORScan is Windows only so I have it on a separate partition on my kids laptop and commandeering that and rebooting in Windows requires some finesse in this house....LOL

it wasnt the black 301a pp with active in desoto, tx was it? haha
No. Almost bought that one.

Had it all lined up- they gave me a hell of a deal, and literally on my way to pick it up we stopped to see a friend who is on the desk at another store for something completely unrelated.

Left with an even better deal 👀🤦

Man I felt bad- but what you gonna do?

dang thats wild. Just a guess. I stopped home on way from work last night at 830 and didnt see it on the lot though. Which one in dfw did you get? I can't seem to find anything besides black or blue with pp in dfw, 301a or 400a. autonation has most the pp packs. Mac Haik stated msrp-dealer discount+ads (1495). Mind if i ask where they had you at? There are a few 300a's with pp in MO, no active and Lebanon in OH has 2024s, 301a and 401a with active and pps that were returned from RTR and Shelby i may go get. about 4800 discount, no ads, 1400 for transport. I work for swa so could just fly up. Would love to stay local though.
