Hi all, just curious what others may think that have more knowledge than me. I’m curious between two gas companies here in Canada (shell vs petrocanada). Shell offers 91 octane with no ethanol, while petro has 94 octane with 10% ethanol. From what I see the ethanol will worsen mileage, and seemed to be recommended but only from drivers whose vehicles were not naturally aspirated (I have a GT). Anyone have some insight? Seems that as these are newer cars the ethanol would probably make a negligible impact to the engine outside of gas mileage. I’m currently doing the 94 as I just understood the higher the better

Everything in Canada has 10% now. Even the Shell V-power.
I use petro 94 when I go to the track, and Shell 91 for normal cruising.

I had no idea shell went 10% also…… guess that really takes away from the debate. 3 cents per litre more for 94 usually and I get a discount with my credit card anyways. Might as well stick with the 94 then

Ethanol has a lower energy content so you will get worst fuel economy depending on how much is in the fuel. At 10% it may only cost you a mile or two per gallon. High octane only matters when you're pushing the engine hard unless the manufactures specification require a minimum octane. My view is at the current cost of fuel if you're not racing, use the minimum octane the engine requires and don't worry about the ethanol. They have been putting ethanol in fuel for at least 25 years and as long as you stay in the 10% range, it has the advantage you're not going to have a problem with water in your fuel system.

Use 100% gas 91 octane in my current cars, and plan to continue that practice.

I hear you. I wish I could still have the choice to do that.

Yes, they didn't have a choice, it's country-wide in Canada.
