hi i am getting such bad 3rd gear lock out on my 2017 gt. it's been fine but all of a sudden it's been a pain to get into 3rd. shifter goes into 3rd fine when car is off. the gear does not grind whatsoever when driving just hit or miss if i'll be able to go into 3rd. can also down shift into 3rd no issues. kinda stumped, is there specific fix for this? short shifter, clutch, fluid, etc.?

Thats a very common problem on the older MT82 Getrags.

But this is the 7g forum. You will get more help on the 6g forum.

I remember on my old '07 Mustang it was sometimes difficult to go into 3rd gear. It was a "safety" feature (that I learned about early on) and only for the 3rd gear: when you over-rev your engine, it physically prevented you to go into it. This dumb feature is something I never understood. Similarly, I never had the same issue when downshifting into 3rd gear.

Eventually I adjusted my driving style and didn't have issues anymore. It used to feel like something is physically wrong.

So as an experiment, try going 1st gear to 3rd gear right away (at the correct RPM of course, you need to wait a bit longer before engaging it after 1st gear) and see how it behaves. If you can go into it with no problem, then that's your answer.

Nowadays I often go 1, 2, 4 when I don't need ridiculous acceleration, especially on city roads. Or 1, 3, 4. Depends on the traffic ahead of me, if somebody is taking their time in front of me, then 1, 3, 4. Gear skipping is a neat trick, I'm sure you know about it. I've been driving manual for almost 20 years, so I got the timing right, and I know the exact RPMs for each gear--I know what it should sound like.
