I replaced the sub with a Pioneer 10" and replaced the center speaker.

The stock sub is awful but the new sub, though still has ZERO punch, for some reason allowed the other speakers to come through better. The door subs do all the heavy lifting.

I think the stock sub was so bad it had a resonance that washed out the other speakers. The sub line itself is severely underpowered.

My 06 GT had a much better sound system with the 1,000W Shaker option. And that included me pulling the Shaker sub out because it was awful dead weight behind the rear tire. Made the car handle like crap.
If a couple of Kg of sub made the car handle like crap you had far bigger issues!

I noticed the same thing. The Pioneer is in no way going to give the boom, boom rattle the windows type sound that a custom system, or even a well designed stock system can, however it tames the awful mid-bass hump in the curve which I find annoying and for some reason also allows the other speakers in the car to sound crisper and more focused. I also replaced the center speaker and for my 65 yo ears it crisped up the sound, vocals, cymbals, etc. For reference I am a professional musician and have done sessions in many recording studios, henceforth my hearing that tops out at 12k :)

You don't understand. The 06 GT was a live axle for starters.

The sub box was about 30-40 lbs. It was a double sub box, BTW. Much more than a "couple of kg". The Shaker 1000 system was no joke.

it was placed at the very back behind the passenger rear wheel.

If I took a left turn with any acceleration, that extra weight behind the rear wheel kicked the rear out in a most unwanted way. When I removed the sub box, the car handled much better.

Man I am just so in love with the car I never listen to music anymore. I put it in custom mode, track, wide open exhaust and literally never turn the radio on.

I used to be sooooo into car audio… my favorite system was the 6.5 Boston Acoustics Pros…

now? I can’t get over how the engine / exhaust sing!
