MEH! Part of it is likely NZ is much smaller, has far fewer roads, vehicles, and drivers than we do. Maybe better driver's education, stricter licensing requirements? I don't know.

Wwaayy too many here treat driving like it's as care free as sitting on their porch in a rocking chair. When it's actually more akin to carrying and operating a loaded fire arm. If you use either casually, capriciously, or carelessly you might not wound or kill anyone, but if you do you shouldn't be surprised. Each is potentially equally deadly.

Definitely not driver education. We're progressively dumbing that down. Same with licensing standards
I think your next paragraph nailed it. Driving sounds too easy on your big wide highways, maybe people lose focus, get distracted by other stuff?
I also get the impression that there's not a great focus on DUI. Would that be true?
That's one thing we did in the 70's and 80's that made a big difference to deaths.
We have regular random breath testing checkpoints all over.
