I think the reason is that the old time engines were low stressed; low revs, low power, low compression etc. I remember my Dads Holden running it's conrod bearings. The fix was simple, crank grind, new shells, new rings for luck, and off it went. These days of high specific outputs and revs...

I wouldn't buy a significantly modded car, like more than just new wheels or maybe a brake upgrade, the reason being; I don't know who did it and/or I don't know if they knew what they were doing.

I don't know what Ford did to it, but the Mazda 2.3 was the go to for high power MX5 turbo set ups. No one seemed to have reliability problems

Be careful torqueing the mounting bolts. Start at a lower figure and work up to spec.

It is stupid how Ford have set it up. Being able to soften the dampers, and having everything else sharp for fanging on a rough road is a huge plus.
